The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Japanese Audio Transcription and Alignment Auditor to review Japanese audio-based AI training data. You will compare human or agent speech recordings with produced transcriptions, apply defined error codes, make pass or fail judgments, and explain your decisions in clear written rationales.

You will also inspect word-level forced-alignment segments by checking timestamps and reference text. When needed, you will correct segmentation errors so the alignment more accurately reflects the spoken audio.

• Remote contractor position
• Part-time commitment of about 10 hours per week
• Each audit task takes about 5 audit hours
• Pay: $37.50 per hour
• Entry-level experience level

What You'll Do

You will listen closely to recordings, evaluate transcription quality, and make consistent judgments using the applicable audit standards. The work requires careful attention to speech sounds, word boundaries, timing, and the distinction between actual annotation errors and genuine acoustic ambiguity.

• Compare spoken Japanese with produced transcriptions
• Apply all relevant transcription error codes
• Identify critical issues clearly
• Assign pass or fail judgments according to the audit standard
• Verify word-level start and end timestamps against the audio
• Correct inaccurate timestamp boundaries
• Split or merge segments when required
• Add missing word segments
• Remove segments that contain no word
• Provide a written reason for every judgment

Requirements

You need native or near-native command of Japanese as spoken in Japan and strong English reading and writing skills. English is needed to interpret audit conventions, error codes, and guidance, as well as to write clear rationales.

You should be able to apply written rubrics consistently across a high volume of judgments while distinguishing similar sounds, word boundaries in continuous speech, clear annotation errors, and genuine acoustic ambiguity.

• Native or near-native Japanese spoken in Japan
• Strong English reading and writing skills
• Accurate use of transcription and forced-alignment error codes
• Careful identification of word boundaries and timestamp mismatches
• Ability to recognize acoustic ambiguity
• Languages: Japanese and English

Helpful Background

Experience in transcription, subtitling, localization, linguistic annotation, or quality assurance can be valuable. Familiarity with AI data annotation, model evaluation, phonetics, linguistics, audio editing, or waveform tools may also support success in this work.

• Default commitment: about 10 hours per week
