About OpenTrain AI

OpenTrain AI is the #1 platform for people starting and growing careers in AI training and data labeling. We hire and contract contributors who help teach AI systems by preparing and verifying real data — a fast-growing way to work in tech with remote, flexible arrangements.

This role is hired and managed by OpenTrain AI. Joining means working on the human side of AI development: your careful transcriptions and audio reviews directly shape how speech-enabled systems understand Japanese.

About AI Training Work

AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human work that teaches AI models to understand speech, text, and images. Contributors do short, focused tasks such as transcribing audio, verifying clips, and rating outputs.

These projects are ideal for flexible, part-time contributors: most let you choose when you work each day, require attention to detail, and often need no prior technical background beyond language accuracy and careful judgment.

The Role

We are hiring native Japanese speakers currently located in Japan to produce accurate, standardized verbatim transcripts of short Japanese audio clips and complete simple listening-based verification steps.

This is a long-term, ongoing contractor role with a steady workload of approximately 1 hour per day, Monday–Friday. The schedule is flexible — complete tasks at a time that works for you each day while maintaining the required daily cadence.

  • Work type: Contractor, part-time
  • Time: ~1 hour/day, Monday–Friday (long-term, 12+ months)
  • Location: Japan-based applicants only
  • Pay: $15 USD per hour

What You’ll Do

Listen to short Japanese recordings and produce clean, standardized verbatim transcripts that reflect exactly what was said (this is not translation or creative writing). Accuracy and consistency are more important than speed.

Complete verification and rating tasks such as flagging unclear or unusable audio and marking segments that cannot be confidently understood, using predefined options and conventions.

  • Transcribe short Japanese audio clips into text following strict guidelines
  • Mark unclear audio sections and apply prescribed conventions for unintelligible speech
  • Complete listening-based verification tasks and simple quality ratings
  • Follow detailed instructions and apply rules consistently across clips

Requirements

You must meet every required qualification below to be eligible for this project. We will ask for a short transcription screening sample before final selection.

  • Currently located in Japan (Japan-based applicants only)
  • Native Japanese speaker with native-level written accuracy
  • Strong command of Japanese writing conventions (kanji/kana, okurigana, punctuation)
  • Comfortable applying strict transcription guidelines consistently (no improvising)
  • Able to handle imperfect audio and mark unclear sections appropriately
  • Prior transcription, captioning/subtitling, or speech data labeling/QA experience preferred
  • Can commit to ~1 hour/day, Monday–Friday, long-term (12+ months)
  • Reliable internet, computer suitable for web tools, quality headphones, quiet workspace
  • Willing to complete a short Japanese transcription screening sample before starting
  • Required English level: Native or Bilingual (for platform communication)

Who Should Apply

Apply if you are detail-oriented, enjoy focused listening work, and can follow strict written guidelines. This role is a good fit for people seeking steady, low-hours remote work that fits around other commitments.

This position is especially well suited to contributors with prior subtitle/captioning or transcription experience, strong Japanese writing skills, and the ability to make careful judgment calls when audio quality is imperfect.

How It Works / Next Steps

If selected you’ll receive orientation materials, the project-specific transcription guidelines, and access to the web-based labeling tools. You’ll complete a short screening sample in Japanese to confirm accuracy and guideline adherence before beginning paid work.

Tasks are completed in small batches and rated for quality. Consistent, accurate work and responsiveness to guidance help maintain long-term participation and steady daily assignments.

  • Screening: short Japanese transcription sample required
  • Platform: web-based annotation tools (no special software beyond a browser required)
  • Feedback: quality reviews and guideline clarifications provided during onboarding
