About AI Training Work
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Specialists prepare and review structured examples so AI systems can better understand technical information, evaluate outputs, and follow real-world design standards.
In this role, your mechanical CAD knowledge will support training data creation and technical model review. Prior AI training experience is not required; strong practical CAD expertise is the key qualification.
Work on projects that help shape how advanced AI systems perform
Apply real-world technical judgment to structured training data
Build experience in a fast-growing, flexible area of tech
The Role
OpenTrain is seeking a Parametric Mechanical CAD Specialist to support AI training work focused on mechanical CAD model review. You will work with parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies, create structured training data, review technical outputs, and provide clear written feedback.
Employment type: Contractor and part-time
Experience level: Entry level
Language: Fluent English
Work location: Worldwide
Time requirement: 20+ hours per week
What You’ll Do
You will create and review accurate, reusable CAD models while translating design intent into clear, structured data. The work requires careful attention to detail, consistent use of guidelines, and the ability to explain technical decisions clearly in writing and verbally.
Create fully parametric 3D CAD models from written briefs
Build robust feature trees and apply precise constraints
Edit and update existing models to meet technical requirements
Document model changes clearly
Audit models for dimensional accuracy, tolerance application, and manufacturability
Review designs across injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining, and casting or forging
Apply design-for-manufacturing principles
Translate design intent into clear, structured CAD data
Communicate technical judgments and project updates in writing and verbally
Requirements
You should have relevant professional or academic expertise in mechanical CAD modeling and assembly-level design. The role calls for strong dimensional and manufacturability judgment, practical knowledge of GD&T, and the ability to follow detailed guidelines consistently.
Four or more years of hands-on experience with SolidWorks, FreeCAD, Fusion 360, Autodesk Inventor, or a comparable parametric CAD platform
Practical GD&T experience using ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent standard
Experience creating or reviewing mechanical parts and assemblies
Experience applying design-for-manufacturing principles across at least two manufacturing methods
Strong written technical communication
Ability to build robust, reusable feature trees and structured CAD data
Careful attention to detail and consistent guideline adherence
FreeCAD familiarity or transferable parametric CAD expertise
Preferred Experience
The following experience is advantageous but is not listed as required: reverse engineering, scan-to-CAD, point-cloud conversion, or CAD workflow automation.
Reverse engineering
Scan-to-CAD workflows
Point-cloud conversion
CAD workflow automation using Python, iLogic, or VBA
