About AI Training Work

AI systems learn from examples prepared, reviewed, and evaluated by people with real-world expertise. In this project, your mechanical design judgment will help assess CAD models and engineering documentation so AI systems can learn from accurate, manufacturable design work.

No previous AI training experience is required. Your parametric CAD, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and quality review skills are the foundation for the work.

  • Contribute to the human side of modern AI development
  • Apply specialized engineering knowledge to model evaluation
  • Work remotely with flexible project-based scheduling

The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking a Parametric CAD Model Review Engineer to create, modify, validate, and review detailed FreeCAD models, mechanical assemblies, technical drawings, and related engineering documentation. The role combines hands-on parametric CAD modeling with structured quality review, manufacturing judgment, and feedback on design accuracy and intent.

This is a remote contractor opportunity for approximately 15-20 hours per week. The listing also specifies a time requirement of 20+ hours per week. Compensation is listed at $40-$100 per hour.

  • Role type: Contractor and part time
  • Location: Worldwide and fully remote
  • Primary language: English
  • Experience level listed: Entry level
  • Compensation: $40-$100 per hour

What You'll Do

You will work with project requirements to develop and assess mechanical designs in FreeCAD or an equivalent parametric CAD environment. Your reviews will focus on model integrity, specification compliance, design intent, manufacturability, and production readiness.

You will also communicate findings clearly, help resolve identified issues, and provide feedback that improves model accuracy and engineering processes.

  • Create, modify, and validate detailed parametric CAD models
  • Develop and optimize mechanical assemblies and integrate components effectively
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing principles
  • Use Design for Manufacturing practices to support manufacturability and quality
  • Produce technical drawings and documentation for engineering review, manufacturing, and assembly
  • Review CAD models and drawings for quality, accuracy, and compliance
  • Identify issues, communicate findings, and help resolve problems
  • Provide feedback on design intent and process improvements
  • Use Python scripting for repetitive or complex CAD operations when useful

Required Qualifications

Advanced proficiency in FreeCAD or an equivalent parametric CAD platform is required, including the ability to build robust and reusable parametric mechanical models. You should have at least two years of experience in mechanical engineering, product design, industrial engineering, or a related field focused on parametric CAD modeling.

Strong engineering judgment is important for evaluating model integrity, specification compliance, manufacturability, and production readiness. You should also be able to collaborate effectively on remote, project-based work.

  • Advanced FreeCAD or equivalent parametric CAD proficiency
  • At least two years of relevant mechanical engineering, product design, industrial engineering, or related experience
  • Strong mechanical design fundamentals
  • Practical knowledge of GD&T and Design for Manufacturing principles
  • Ability to create and review manufacturing and assembly drawings
  • Experience verifying model integrity and specification compliance
  • Ability to assess manufacturability and production readiness
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills

Helpful Experience

Python-based CAD automation experience is helpful but not required. Candidates should be comfortable assessing engineering work for accuracy, design intent, manufacturability, and compliance with specifications.

  • Python scripting for CAD automation
  • Experience creating robust, reusable parametric models
  • Engineering quality assurance or design review experience
