Contribute to cutting-edge AI development
Use specialized professional expertise in a flexible contract role
The Role
OpenTrain is seeking a Parametric CAD Design and Review Specialist for a contractor project focused on mechanical design and AI training. You will create, revise, and assess three-dimensional models and technical drawings while documenting design decisions, model edits, audit findings, and manufacturability considerations.
The work combines production-oriented mechanical engineering practice with careful evaluation and explanation. You should be able to perform edit-level work with at least four years of hands-on parametric modeling experience, or complex creation work with ten or more years of experience.
Engagement: Contractor, part time
Expected availability: 20+ hours per week
Location: Worldwide and fully remote
Language: English
Rate: $30–$100 USD per hour
What You'll Do
You will develop and review parametric mechanical designs from detailed written briefs, applying sound modeling practices and practical production judgment. You will also communicate precise, solution-oriented feedback in both written and verbal formats.
Develop fully parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies
Edit existing models to meet revised requirements while preserving robust parametric structure
Audit models for dimensional accuracy, tolerances, manufacturability, and production readiness
Create and interpret technical drawings using ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent GD&T standard
Apply design for manufacturability principles to injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining, and casting or forging
Document the rationale behind design decisions, model edits, and audit findings for AI training
Manage assembly-level designs and complex mechanical systems
Provide clear, precise, and solution-oriented technical feedback
Required Qualifications
This role requires strong Autodesk Inventor expertise and the ability to work with comparable parametric CAD platforms. Candidates should bring practical experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, manufacturability reviews, complex assemblies, and technical documentation.
At least four years of hands-on parametric modeling experience for edit-level work, or 10+ years for complex creation work
Strong Autodesk Inventor or comparable parametric CAD modeling experience
Experience with assembly-level mechanical design and complex mechanical systems
Practical experience applying ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent GD&T standard
Experience reviewing models for dimensional accuracy and production readiness
Design for manufacturability knowledge across multiple manufacturing processes
Clear technical documentation and stakeholder communication skills
Helpful Background
Prior professional experience with FreeCAD is ideal. Experience with other parametric CAD tools and technical workflows can also be highly relevant, particularly when combined with strong mechanical design judgment.
FreeCAD, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360 experience
Reverse engineering or scan-to-CAD experience
Point-cloud-to-model reconstruction experience
CAD automation using Python, iLogic, VBA, NX Open, or similar tools
