About OpenTrain

OpenTrain AI is the hiring and contracting organization for this role. OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling, helping contributors discover projects, build a professional profile, and apply to opportunities in a fast-growing technology industry.

About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building modern artificial intelligence. Specialists prepare and review high-quality examples so AI systems can learn how to interpret technical information, follow design intent, and produce more reliable results.

In this project, your mechanical engineering judgment will help create accurate, well-documented CAD examples and feedback for AI model training. Prior AI-training experience is not required; the work depends on demonstrated expertise in parametric modeling and manufacturing.

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Parametric CAD Modeling and Review Specialist for remote, project-based contractor work. You will create, revise, and evaluate parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies from detailed written briefs.

The opportunity is marked entry level, but specific assignments may require substantial practical experience: four or more years for model-editing work or ten or more years for complex model-creation assignments.

  • Contractor and part-time opportunity
  • Remote and open worldwide
  • 20+ hours per week
  • English-language work
  • Pay range: $40–$100 USD per hour

What You'll Do

You will turn written engineering briefs into dependable CAD data that communicates design intent clearly. The work combines advanced parametric modeling, technical review, documentation, and practical design-for-manufacturing judgment.

  • Build fully parametric 3D models of mechanical parts and assemblies.
  • Create dependable sketches, constraints, and feature trees.
  • Edit existing models as requirements change while preserving manufacturability and specification compliance.
  • Audit dimensions, tolerances, feature trees, and design intent for gaps or deviations.
  • Review production readiness, dimensional accuracy, tolerances, and manufacturability.
  • Deliver consistent CAD data for AI model training.
  • Document the rationale behind important design decisions.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing knowledge across injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, casting, or forging.
  • Communicate technical feedback and design rationale clearly in writing and conversation.

Required Qualifications

You should have professional experience building robust, reusable parametric models of mechanical parts and assemblies in FreeCAD or comparable CAD platforms. The role requires practical engineering judgment rather than familiarity with AI-training tools.

  • Extensive practical experience with FreeCAD, Autodesk Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Inventor, or a comparable parametric CAD platform.
  • Applied knowledge of GD&T, including ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent standard.
  • Design-for-manufacturing expertise across at least two or three relevant manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to model and review both individual parts and complete assemblies.
  • Four or more years of applied experience for model-editing assignments.
  • Ten or more years of applied experience for complex model-creation assignments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, attention to detail, and practical problem-solving skills.

Helpful Background

The following experience is valuable for selected assignments and can help you contribute across a wider range of CAD training projects.

  • Professional FreeCAD experience.
  • Experience transferring modeling knowledge between parametric CAD platforms.
  • Reverse engineering, including scan-to-CAD or point-cloud conversion.
  • CAD automation or scripting with Python, iLogic, NX Open, or VBA.
  • Experience documenting design decisions and technical review findings.

Work Arrangement and Compensation

This is a remote, part-time contractor opportunity involving project-based CAD modeling, editing, review, and documentation. Work is expected to require 20 or more hours per week, with compensation ranging from $40 to $100 USD per hour depending on the assignment and applicable experience.

  • Work remotely from anywhere in the world.
  • Use your existing mechanical CAD and manufacturing expertise.
  • Contribute to high-quality datasets used in AI training and model feedback.
  • Prior experience in AI training is not required.

Why Build Your AI Training Career with OpenTrain

OpenTrain helps people start and grow careers in AI training and data labeling. By applying your specialized engineering skills to technical model review and feedback, you can participate in cutting-edge AI work while building a profile that reflects your professional expertise.

  • Flexible project-based work that can fit around other commitments.
  • A way to apply mechanical CAD expertise to emerging AI systems.
  • Free OpenTrain account creation and streamlined applications.
  • Opportunities to build a durable profile in the growing AI-training industry.
