About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect contributors with meaningful, remote work that directly shapes how modern AI systems behave.

This role is contracted through OpenTrain AI. You will join a community of people who train and refine AI by providing high-quality linguistic judgments and annotations.

About AI training and dictionary work

AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human side of building artificial intelligence: people prepare and correct examples that models learn from. Language-focused tasks like dictionary proofreading help models understand correct spelling, morphology, and pronunciation.

This project focuses on high-accuracy, linguistically informed corrections to Malay entries—work that has immediate impact on speech and text models that rely on clean lexical and phonemic data.

The role

You will proofread Malay dictionary entries to confirm whether each headword is Malay, correct orthography when needed, and adjust or correct the pronunciation transcriptions to match a specified phoneme set.

This is a remote, part-time contractor role. The project is expected to end in July and requires consistent availability during the project period.

What you'll do day to day

Work through dictionary entries and apply two core checks for each item: language identification/spelling and phoneme-level pronunciation proofreading.

Follow the provided phoneme conventions and examples exactly; flag uncertain items according to project guidelines.

  • Determine whether a word is Malay and correct its spelling where necessary.
  • Proofread and correct pronunciation strings using the specified phoneme set.
  • Follow examples: e.g., correct 'polliglot p o . l i g . l a t' to 'poliglot p o . l i g . l o t'.
  • Mark items for review when the Malay status is uncertain or the phoneme mapping is unclear.

Requirements

Candidates must be native Malay speakers with strong orthographic knowledge and sensitivity to Malay phonology. This project expects an expert-level skillset in linguistic judgment and careful proofreading.

All candidates must pass a qualification test before starting work.

  • Native Malay speaker (required).
  • Availability to dedicate at least 3 hours per day while the project runs (roughly 20+ hours/week).
  • Willingness to pass the project qualification test before onboarding.
  • Ability to reach an accuracy of 97% or higher under spot-check quality control.

Schedule, pay, and quality checks

This is a contract, part-time role. The project is expected to end in July; during that period you must be able to work consistently and meet the minimum daily availability.

Compensation is set at 6 USD per 1,000 words. The project budget includes a fixed-price component of USD 100 as listed in the posting.

  • Pay rate: 6 USD per 1,000 words.
  • Listed fixed-price budget: USD 100.
  • Accuracy requirement: 97% overall.
  • Quality check method: spot checks; items falling below the required accuracy must be redone.

How it works and how to apply

Apply through OpenTrain by submitting your profile and completing the required qualification test. Only candidates who pass the test will be approved to begin work.

If approved, you will receive guidelines, the phoneme set reference, and the labeling interface instructions. Follow the provided instructions and respond to any spot-check feedback promptly.

  • Create an OpenTrain account (free) and apply to this project.
  • Complete the mandatory qualification test to be considered.
  • Work as a contractor under the project schedule and quality rules.
