About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect people with flexible, remote projects that teach AI systems how humans speak and write.

  • Build a profile, discover projects across the industry, and apply in minutes.
  • OpenTrain focuses on entry-friendly and specialist opportunities that shape how modern AI behaves.

Why AI Training Work Matters

AI training (data labeling / annotation) is the human side of building intelligent systems. Contributors annotate, evaluate, and improve model outputs so speech and language models sound natural and accurate.

This work is highly flexible — often part-time and remote — and gives you direct influence on state-of-the-art AI behavior.

  • Remote, flexible work you can fit around other commitments.
  • Entry-level opportunities available; specialist skills can earn higher pay.

The Role

We are hiring linguists fluent in Shanghainese (Shanghai dialect) to evaluate and improve an AI chatbot's spoken output. You will record audio prompts, listen to AI-generated audio, and rate pronunciation and fluency until samples reach native-level naturalness.

This is a contract, part-time role under 20 hours per week with pay at $23 USD per hour. The project accepts worldwide contributors who meet the language and equipment requirements.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time.
  • Time commitment: Less than 20 hours/week.
  • Pay: $23 USD per hour.
  • Location: Remote — worldwide applicants welcome.

What You'll Do

Your main goal is to help the model produce natural Shanghainese speech. You will iterate on AI responses until at least two (and up to five) outputs score a perfect 7/7 for naturalness.

Content is not being judged — only pronunciation, accent features, and fluency. You will provide structured feedback to guide improvements across multiple attempts.

  • Record clear audio prompts from your laptop/PC.
  • Generate or review AI responses and listen critically for accent and fluency.
  • Rate outputs using a 7-point naturalness scale and repeat iterations as needed (10, 20, or more attempts may be required).
  • Provide concise, actionable notes on pronunciation and prosody for each iteration.

Requirements

Candidates must be fluent in Shanghainese with at least 2 years of experience using the dialect. You need a reliable laptop or PC and a stable internet connection.

Relevant experience in speech evaluation, linguistic analysis, or accent validation is preferred but not mandatory.

  • Fluency in Shanghainese (Shanghai dialect) and strong grasp of phonetics, accent variations, and fluency patterns.
  • Minimum 2+ years experience with the dialect.
  • Access to your own laptop or PC and stable internet.
  • Comfort recording audio and rating outputs using provided tools ().

Interview & Evaluation

As part of screening you may be asked to demonstrate your evaluation skills in an interview-style assessment. The role requires both linguistic knowledge and the ability to give structured feedback.

The interview will be professional but conversational; you'll explain your experience, describe accent-specific features, and walk through how you'd improve AI outputs across multiple iterations.

  • Sample interview prompts will ask about your professional use of Shanghainese and common phonetic/intonation features.
  • You may be asked how you'd approach iterative improvement until outputs reach a 7/7 naturalness rating.
  • Evaluation criteria include linguistic accuracy, ability to spot accent/fluent issues, iterative improvement mindset, and clarity of feedback.

How To Apply

If you meet the requirements, apply through the OpenTrain platform and include brief notes on your Shanghainese experience and any past speech evaluation or linguistic work. Expect a short screening task or interview to demonstrate your rating and feedback approach.

Thank you — contributors to this project directly shape how conversational AI speaks Shanghainese in real-world applications.

  • Prepare examples of your dialect experience and any relevant linguistic work.
  • Be ready to record short audio samples and to provide structured feedback during the screening.
