About OpenTrain
OpenTrain is the centralized, open platform where AI training and data-labeling freelancers find work, consolidate opportunities across platforms, and build a unified AI training portfolio they control. We make specialized AI training work easier to track, apply for, and grow into a durable freelance career.
About this role
OpenTrain is recruiting a contractor specialist who can create, revise, and review parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies for AI training data. You will turn detailed written briefs into robust models with dependable sketches, constraints, and feature trees, then help ensure that the resulting CAD data is accurate, manufacturable, and clearly documented. The work combines advanced parametric modeling with practical engineering judgment across several production methods.
What you will do
Build fully parametric 3D models of mechanical parts and assemblies from written briefs. Edit existing models to reflect changing requirements while preserving manufacturability and specification compliance. Audit dimensions, tolerances, feature trees, and design intent, identifying gaps or deviations. Deliver consistent CAD data and document the rationale behind important design decisions for AI model training. Apply design-for-manufacturing knowledge across injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, and casting or forging. Communicate technical feedback and design rationale clearly in writing and conversation.
Required skills
Extensive practical experience with parametric CAD platforms, ideally FreeCAD, or strong experience with Autodesk Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or Inventor. Applied knowledge of GD&T, including ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent standard. Design-for-manufacturing expertise across at least two or three relevant manufacturing processes. Ability to handle assembly-level modeling as well as single-part work. Four or more years of applied experience for model editing, or ten or more years for complex model creation assignments.
Helpful background
Professional FreeCAD experience and familiarity with workflows for transferring knowledge between parametric CAD platforms are valuable. Reverse engineering experience, including scan-to-CAD or point-cloud conversion, is helpful. CAD automation or scripting with tools such as Python, iLogic, NX Open, or VBA is also useful. Strong written and verbal communication, attention to detail, and practical problem-solving are important.
Work arrangement
This is a remote contractor opportunity involving project-based CAD modeling, editing, review, and documentation. Prior experience in AI training is not required; the role relies on demonstrated mechanical CAD and manufacturing expertise.
Why OpenTrain
OpenTrain helps freelancers consolidate AI training opportunities across platforms and build an AI training portfolio that reflects their specialized skills. This role offers a way for experienced CAD professionals to apply their engineering judgment to high-quality training data and model feedback work.
