The Role
OpenTrain is seeking a Parametric CAD Model Review Engineer to create, modify, validate, and review detailed FreeCAD models, mechanical assemblies, technical drawings, and related engineering documentation.
This role combines hands-on parametric CAD modeling with structured quality assurance, manufacturing judgment, and feedback on model accuracy, design intent, and process improvements. The opportunity is remote and project-based, with contractor and part-time engagement.

What You'll Do
You will work directly with parametric CAD models and engineering documentation, checking whether designs satisfy project requirements and are suitable for engineering review, manufacturing, and assembly.
You will also communicate findings, help resolve issues, and provide feedback that improves the accuracy, consistency, and usefulness of engineering work for AI training.
Create, modify, and validate detailed parametric CAD models in FreeCAD
Develop and optimize mechanical assemblies using sound assembly design and component integration practices
Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and Design for Manufacturing principles
Produce clear technical drawings and manufacturing or assembly documentation
Review CAD models and drawings for engineering quality and identify issues
Assess model integrity, specification compliance, manufacturability, and production readiness
Communicate review findings and help resolve design or documentation issues
Provide feedback on model accuracy, design intent, and process improvements
Use Python scripting to automate repetitive or complex CAD operations when useful
Requirements and Helpful Experience
Advanced proficiency in FreeCAD or an equivalent parametric CAD platform is required. You should be able to build robust, reusable parametric mechanical models and assess engineering work for accuracy, design intent, manufacturability, and compliance with specifications.
The role requires at least two years of experience in mechanical engineering, product design, industrial engineering, or a related field focused on parametric CAD modeling. Python-based CAD automation experience is helpful but not required.
Advanced FreeCAD or equivalent parametric CAD proficiency
Experience building robust and reusable parametric mechanical models
Strong mechanical design fundamentals
Practical knowledge of GD&T and Design for Manufacturing principles
Ability to produce and review accurate manufacturing and assembly drawings
Engineering quality assurance judgment
Ability to verify model integrity, specification compliance, manufacturability, and production readiness
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills for remote collaboration
Python experience for CAD automation is helpful but not required
No previous AI training experience is required
