About AI Training & Localization Work

AI training is the human side of building modern models: people review, correct, and evaluate examples that models learn from. Localization and translation are a central part of this work when models produce multilingual outputs or must behave appropriately for specific locales.

This role sits at the intersection of localization and generative AI evaluation — you will apply professional translation and LQA practices to improve model outputs, shape quality guidelines, and produce clear model answers and explanations used to train and evaluate systems.

The Role

You will review and improve AI-generated Japanese and English content by evaluating accuracy, clarity, reasoning quality, and adherence to prompts and guidelines. Your judgments will be structured and defensible, grounded in localization best practices (LQA/MQM), terminology management, and CAT/QA workflows.

This is a remote contractor, part-time role (<20 hours/week) with pay at $30 USD per hour. The project accepts contributors worldwide and expects dependable throughput, clear documentation, and responsiveness across time zones.

What You'll Do

Daily work combines careful linguistic review with structured evaluation. You will both correct content and provide explanations that help train models and calibrate other raters.

• Evaluate AI outputs for accuracy, clarity, reasoning quality, and adherence to prompts and guidelines.
• Identify linguistic and methodological issues and perform root-cause thinking for consistent error classification.
• Fact-check localized details (units, names, dates, references) using reliable sources when needed.
• Write high-quality corrected outputs, model answers, and clear explanations for ratings.
• Rate and rank multiple AI responses using structured evaluation criteria and severity/category judgments.
• Apply LQA/MQM error typologies, style guides, terminology rules, and CAT/QA workflows to make defensible quality decisions.

Requirements

To succeed you'll need a blend of strong linguistic skill, hands-on localization experience, and familiarity with QA frameworks used in professional translation and AI evaluation.

• Native or near-native Japanese proficiency for the Japan locale with strong professional writing/editing skills.
• English proficiency at C1+ (reading and writing) to interpret prompts, sources, and evaluation guidelines.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Japanese Translation, Linguistics, Localization, Communications, or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years of professional localization/translation experience; multilingual localization preferred.
• Demonstrated experience applying MQM/LQA, including severity/category decisions and consistent error classification.
• Proficiency with CAT tools and QA workflows (TM/termbases, automated checks, structured guidelines).
• Strong terminology management and copyediting ability (tone, register, inclusivity, cultural nuance).
• Ability to rigorously fact-check localized content using reliable sources and sound reasoning.
• Comfortable in hourly contractor workflows: dependable throughput, clear documentation, and responsiveness across time zones.
• Prior experience with AI data training, annotation, or evaluation is preferred (but not required).
