About AI training and localization work

AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human work that teaches models to understand and produce language. Localization and linguistic QA are a core part of that process: reviewers check translated outputs for accuracy, tone, cultural appropriateness, and consistency.

Contributors directly influence how state-of-the-art systems behave across languages and locales, often with flexible schedules and no prior platform-specific experience required.

• You’ll evaluate model outputs for accuracy, clarity, and adherence to prompts and guidelines.
• Tasks commonly include writing corrected outputs, explanations/model answers, and applying error typologies like MQM/LQA.

The role

As a Japanese–English Localization & LQA Specialist you will evaluate and improve AI-generated text for the Japan locale. Your work helps ensure translations are accurate, natural, and defensible by industry QA standards.

• Review AI translations and localized text for accuracy, register, tone, and cultural nuance.
• Identify linguistic and methodological issues and apply MQM/LQA typologies for consistent error classification.
• Write high-quality corrected outputs and clear explanations or model answers.
• Rate and rank multiple AI responses using structured evaluation criteria.

What you'll do day to day

Your tasks will combine linguistic expertise, QA judgment, and clear documentation. Work is hourly and measured by throughput and documented deliverables.

• Compare AI outputs against source prompts and references; evaluate accuracy and reasoning quality.
• Apply terminology management, style guides, and CAT/QA workflows to make defensible decisions.
• Fact-check details (units, names, references, dates) using reliable sources when required.
• Provide detailed error tags, severity assessments, and corrective suggestions.
• Rank candidate model responses and produce model answers or improved translations.

Requirements

You must meet the role’s language, experience, and workflow requirements listed below. OpenTrain AI expects contractors to be dependable, document work clearly, and respond across time zones as needed.

• Native or near-native Japanese proficiency for the Japan locale with strong professional writing/editing skills.
• English proficiency at C1+ (reading and writing) to interpret prompts, sources, and evaluation guidelines.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Japanese Translation, Linguistics, Localization, Communications, or related field.
• 5+ years professional localization/translation experience; multilingual localization experience preferred.
• Demonstrated experience applying MQM/LQA (consistent severity/category decisions and root-cause thinking).
• Proficiency with CAT tools and QA workflows (TM/termbases, automated checks, structured guidelines).
• Strong terminology management and copyediting ability (tone, register, inclusivity, cultural nuance).
• Ability to rigorously fact-check localized content using reliable sources and sound reasoning.
• Comfortable with hourly contractor workflows: dependable throughput, clear documentation, responsiveness across time zones.
• Prior experience with AI data training/annotation/evaluation is preferred (not required).

How the contract works

This is a part-time contractor role with OpenTrain AI. Work is remote and available worldwide. Expect less than 20 hours per week on average, paid at USD 30 per hour.

You will follow structured evaluation tasks (text-based, including evaluation_rating, RLHF-style ranking, and translation/localization QA), document decisions, and meet throughput and quality expectations.
