About AI Training And Language Evaluation

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Language professionals help models improve by reviewing generated text, checking accuracy and clarity, ranking competing responses, and providing corrected examples and detailed feedback.

This work gives experienced translators and localization specialists a direct role in shaping how AI communicates across languages, cultures, and regional conventions.

  • Work with AI-generated text and model responses
  • Apply structured evaluation criteria and language expertise
  • Help improve accuracy, consistency, reasoning quality, and prompt adherence

The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking an experienced Japanese-English Localization and Translation Expert for a Japan-locale project. You will use professional translation, localization, linguistic quality assurance, and editing expertise to make consistent, defensible decisions about AI-generated outputs.

The role requires native or near-native Japanese proficiency, C1 or higher English reading and writing skills, and at least five years of professional localization or translation experience.

  • Language pair: Japanese and English
  • Primary locale: Japan
  • Experience level: Intermediate
  • Data type: Text
  • Preferred background: AI data training, annotation, or evaluation

What You’ll Do

You will assess AI-generated responses against prompts, sources, and project guidelines. Your work will combine linguistic judgment, methodology review, fact-checking, and high-quality writing in Japanese and English.

You will also evaluate multiple responses comparatively, documenting the reasoning behind your ratings and corrections so that model quality can be measured consistently.

  • Evaluate accuracy, clarity, reasoning quality, and adherence to prompts and guidelines
  • Identify linguistic, localization, and methodology issues
  • Apply LQA and MQM error typologies, including severity and category decisions
  • Fact-check units, names, references, dates, and other localized details using reliable sources
  • Write corrected outputs, explanations, and model answers
  • Rate and rank multiple AI responses using structured evaluation criteria
  • Review tone, register, inclusivity, cultural nuance, and terminology consistency
  • Document decisions clearly and apply guidelines consistently

Requirements

This opportunity is designed for a skilled language professional who can combine nuanced Japanese writing and editing with strong English comprehension. You should be comfortable making careful quality judgments and explaining the reasoning behind them.

Experience with localization quality frameworks and production workflows is essential. Familiarity with AI evaluation is helpful, but prior AI training experience is preferred rather than required.

  • Native or near-native Japanese proficiency with strong professional writing and editing skills for the Japan locale
  • C1 or higher English proficiency for reading and writing
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Japanese Translation, Linguistics, Localization, Communications, or a related field
  • At least five years of professional localization or translation experience
  • Demonstrated experience applying MQM or LQA, including severity and category decisions, consistent error classification, and root-cause analysis
  • Proficiency with CAT tools and QA workflows, including translation memories, termbases, automated checks, and structured guidelines
  • Strong terminology management and copyediting skills
  • Ability to fact-check localized content using reliable sources and sound reasoning
  • Dependable throughput, clear documentation, and responsiveness across time zones

Contract Details

This is a part-time hourly contractor role with a workload of less than 20 hours per week. The rate is $30 USD per hour.

The project is available to candidates located in Japan. You should be comfortable working within hourly contractor workflows and maintaining reliable communication while completing quality-focused review tasks.

  • Employment type: Contractor
  • Schedule: Part time
  • Time requirement: Less than 20 hours per week
  • Compensation: $30 USD per hour
  • Eligible country: Japan
