The Role
OpenTrain AI is seeking an experienced Japanese-English Localization and Translation Expert for a Japan-locale project. You will use professional translation, localization, linguistic quality assurance, and editing expertise to make consistent, defensible decisions about AI-generated outputs.
The role requires native or near-native Japanese proficiency, C1 or higher English reading and writing skills, and at least five years of professional localization or translation experience.

What You’ll Do
You will assess AI-generated responses against prompts, sources, and project guidelines. Your work will combine linguistic judgment, methodology review, fact-checking, and high-quality writing in Japanese and English.
You will also evaluate multiple responses comparatively, documenting the reasoning behind your ratings and corrections so that model quality can be measured consistently.
Evaluate accuracy, clarity, reasoning quality, and adherence to prompts and guidelines
Identify linguistic, localization, and methodology issues
Apply LQA and MQM error typologies, including severity and category decisions
Fact-check units, names, references, dates, and other localized details using reliable sources
Write corrected outputs, explanations, and model answers
Rate and rank multiple AI responses using structured evaluation criteria
Review tone, register, inclusivity, cultural nuance, and terminology consistency
Document decisions clearly and apply guidelines consistently
Requirements
This opportunity is designed for a skilled language professional who can combine nuanced Japanese writing and editing with strong English comprehension. You should be comfortable making careful quality judgments and explaining the reasoning behind them.
Experience with localization quality frameworks and production workflows is essential. Familiarity with AI evaluation is helpful, but prior AI training experience is preferred rather than required.
Native or near-native Japanese proficiency with strong professional writing and editing skills for the Japan locale
C1 or higher English proficiency for reading and writing
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Japanese Translation, Linguistics, Localization, Communications, or a related field
At least five years of professional localization or translation experience
Demonstrated experience applying MQM or LQA, including severity and category decisions, consistent error classification, and root-cause analysis
Proficiency with CAT tools and QA workflows, including translation memories, termbases, automated checks, and structured guidelines
Strong terminology management and copyediting skills
Ability to fact-check localized content using reliable sources and sound reasoning
Dependable throughput, clear documentation, and responsiveness across time zones
Contract Details
This is a part-time hourly contractor role with a workload of less than 20 hours per week. The rate is $30 USD per hour.
The project is available to candidates located in Japan. You should be comfortable working within hourly contractor workflows and maintaining reliable communication while completing quality-focused review tasks.
