The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Japanese PDF Annotation and Transcription Expert for AI training work involving complex Japanese documents. You will work with publicly available PDF pages that may include handwriting, tables, diagrams, vertical text, dense layouts, and other multimodal elements.

Your annotations and faithful transcriptions will help AI systems learn document structure and Japanese text accurately. This is an entry-level, part-time contractor opportunity for contributors available to work 20 or more hours per week.

What You'll Do

You will prepare structured annotations and accurate transcriptions across varied Japanese PDF formats. The work requires careful visual interpretation, consistent use of document taxonomies, and close quality review.

• Source suitable Japanese PDF documents and record source information
• Identify and draw bounding boxes around meaningful page regions
• Annotate titles, headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, figures, diagrams, captions, formulas, questions, and answer fields
• Assign component types and establish reliable reading order
• Link related page regions where appropriate
• Transcribe visible text character for character
• Flag illegible content instead of guessing
• Capture language, document type, page dimensions, and other page metadata
• Review annotation quality and maintain consistency across varied layouts

Requirements

You must have native Japanese fluency and command of kanji, hiragana, katakana, furigana, and variant character forms. The role also requires experience transcribing Japanese documents with character-level accuracy and the ability to interpret challenging document formats.

Professional experience in interpretation, journalism, translation, editorial work, or comparable document-intensive work is required. Familiarity with annotation, transcription, OCR correction, localization, document production, or Japanese script and encoding is helpful.
