About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building modern artificial intelligence. Specialists review model outputs, create examples, and provide structured feedback so AI systems can produce more accurate and reliable results.

In this role, your legal and tax expertise will help assess whether AI can translate complex statutory language into precise, testable requirements. The work directly supports the development of more capable AI systems.

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a U.S. Sales Tax Statute AI Evaluator to review AI-generated translations of sales and use tax statutes and regulations across multiple U.S. state jurisdictions, with occasional federal tax provisions. This contract role focuses on statutory precision, legal logic, exceptions, and edge-case analysis rather than routine tax return preparation.

You will work remotely as an individual professional for 20 or more hours per week. Prior AI experience is not required, but the ability to interpret tax law and evaluate formal legal translations is essential.

  • Work remotely from the United States
  • Contractor and part-time arrangement
  • Expected time commitment of 20+ hours per week
  • Compensation of $65–$70 per hour
  • English-language work

What You'll Do

You will turn detailed statutory language into consistent evaluation criteria and assess whether AI-generated legal translations accurately reflect the underlying law. Your reviews will be submitted as structured written evaluations through a digital review platform.

  • Read and interpret sales and use tax statutes and regulations at the subsection level
  • Build independent rubrics that convert statutory language into discrete requirements
  • Assign critical, secondary, or minor severity based on the genuine importance of each requirement
  • Score formal translations for conditions, thresholds, AND/OR logic, exceptions, and defined terms
  • Write self-contained test scenarios with facts, dates, amounts, and expected outcomes
  • Include edge cases and identify discrepancies, statutory exceptions, and genuine ambiguities
  • Provide structured written evaluations with clear, reproducible reasoning

Required Qualifications

This opportunity requires an active CPA license, Chartered Accountant designation, or experience as a U.S. tax attorney. You must be able to interpret tax statutes and regulations, not only prepare tax returns.

Strong understanding of sales and use tax or state and local tax law is preferred. Precise written communication, careful reasoning, and close attention to detail are essential.

  • Active CPA license, Chartered Accountant designation, or U.S. tax attorney experience
  • Experience reading and interpreting sales and use tax statutes or regulations
  • Ability to analyze statutory conditions, thresholds, AND/OR structures, exceptions, and defined terms
  • Skill in creating precise legal rubrics and edge-case test scenarios
  • Ability to provide structured written evaluations with reproducible reasoning

Helpful Background

The following experience can strengthen your application, though it is not listed as required:

  • Experience across multiple state tax jurisdictions
  • Enrolled Agent designation
  • Relevant federal tax experience
  • Experience validating AI or technology-driven tax content
  • Experience training teams or providing written feedback on legal or tax language
