About this role. OpenTrain is recruiting a contractor specializing in parametric mechanical CAD design and review. You will create, revise, and assess three-dimensional models and technical drawings while contributing expert design judgment to an AI training project. The role combines production-oriented mechanical engineering practice with careful documentation of design decisions, model edits, audits, and manufacturability considerations.

What you will do. Develop fully parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies from detailed written briefs. Edit existing models to meet revised requirements while preserving robust parametric structure and modeling best practices. Audit models for dimensional accuracy, tolerances, manufacturability, and production readiness. Create and interpret technical drawings using ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standard. Apply design for manufacturability principles across injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining, and casting or forging. Document the rationale behind design decisions, model edits, and audit findings for AI training use. Communicate precise, solution-oriented feedback in written and verbal formats.

Required skills. Candidates should have at least four years of hands-on parametric modeling experience for edit-level work, or ten or more years for complex creation work. Strong Autodesk Inventor expertise and the ability to work with comparable parametric CAD platforms are required. Practical GD&T experience using ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent standard, design for manufacturability experience across multiple processes, and the ability to manage assembly-level designs and complex mechanical systems are important. Clear technical documentation and stakeholder communication skills are also expected.

Helpful background. Experience with FreeCAD, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360 is highly relevant, and prior professional FreeCAD experience is ideal. Background in scan-to-CAD or point-cloud-to-model reconstruction is useful, as is familiarity with Python, iLogic, VBA, NX Open, or similar CAD automation tools.
