The CNC Machinist Role

OpenTrain is seeking CNC Machinists with hands-on experience in both machine setup and production. This part-time, remote contractor role requires at least 20 hours per week and is open worldwide to candidates with outstanding written and verbal English communication skills.

The role pays $80 to $120 USD per hour. The position is listed as entry level within the AI training industry, while the machining work itself requires 5 or more years of practical experience.

What You'll Do

You will apply your CNC machining knowledge to evaluate and contribute information about production workflows, machine operation, tooling, inspection, and manufacturability.

• Set up and operate hobbyist CNC machines such as the Makera Carvera and industrial machines such as the Haas VF-2.
• Load and verify CNC programs, install tooling, configure work-holding, and set work offsets.
• Run first-piece cycles, inspect parts against drawings, and adjust setups to maintain dimensional accuracy.
• Perform routine machine maintenance and diagnose tool wear, chatter, and dimensional drift.
• Use calipers, micrometers, indicators, and CMM equipment to validate parts.
• Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, and manufacturing documentation.
• Collaborate with CAM programmers and provide feedback on setup optimization and manufacturability.

Required Qualifications

This role is designed for experienced CNC professionals who can explain, evaluate, and troubleshoot real machining processes. Your expertise should include both setup and production work.

• 5+ years of hands-on CNC machining experience, including setup and production
• Expertise operating Haas control systems, including VF-2 or similar platforms
• Proficiency in blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation
• Experience using precision measurement instruments, including calipers, micrometers, indicators, and CMMs
• Experience working with metals and plastics
• Ability to troubleshoot machining processes and optimize setups
• Outstanding written and verbal English communication skills

Helpful Background

Experience with hobbyist or desktop CNC equipment is helpful, particularly familiarity with platforms such as the Makera Carvera. This background can complement industrial CNC experience when evaluating a range of machining environments.
