The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting CNC Machinists to contribute expertise in advanced part production and process optimization. This part-time contractor role involves evaluating and collecting information related to CNC machining workflows, setups, production processes, and quality control.

What You’ll Do

  • Set up and operate hobbyist CNC machines such as the Makera Carvera and industrial machines such as the Haas VF-2.
  • Load and verify CNC programs, install tooling, configure work-holding, and set work offsets.
  • Run first-piece cycles and inspect machined parts against drawings.
  • Adjust setups to ensure dimensional accuracy.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and diagnose tool wear, chatter, dimensional drift, and related issues.
  • Use calipers, micrometers, indicators, and CMM equipment to validate parts.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Collaborate with CAM programmers and provide feedback on setup optimization and manufacturability.

Required Qualifications

This role is designed for contributors with substantial hands-on CNC experience and strong technical communication skills. Prior AI-training experience is not required; practical machining knowledge is the focus.

  • At least 5 years of hands-on CNC machining experience, including both setup and production
  • Expertise operating Haas control systems, including VF-2 or similar platforms
  • Proficiency in blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation
  • Experience using precision measurement instruments, including calipers, micrometers, indicators, and CMMs
  • Experience working with metals and plastics
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining processes and optimize setups
  • Outstanding written and verbal English communication skills

Helpful Background and Compensation

Familiarity with hobbyist or desktop CNC platforms is preferred, including systems such as the Makera Carvera. Compensation for this project is listed at $50-$100 USD per hour, with a maximum hourly rate of $100.
