About AI Training Work
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. People with real-world expertise create, review, and evaluate examples that help AI systems produce more accurate and useful results.
In this role, your mechanical design knowledge will support technical AI training materials, including CAD models, manufacturing documentation, and assembly guidance grounded in practical production standards.
The Role
As a FreeCAD Manufacturing Design Engineer, you will create production-ready mechanical CAD models and engineering documentation for AI training. You will work with parametric components, assemblies, drawings, and assembly instructions while applying real-world design and manufacturability principles.
This is a remote, part-time contractor engagement. The role description estimates approximately 15–20 hours per week, while the listing's time requirement is 20+ hours per week.
Target hourly rate: $40–$100 USD
Engagement type: Contractor and part-time
Location: Worldwide and fully remote
Language: English
What You'll Do
You will develop and review technical examples that accurately reflect professional manufacturing design practice. Your work will combine advanced CAD modeling, engineering documentation, and quality assurance.
Create and revise detailed parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies using FreeCAD or a comparable platform.
Produce engineering drawings suitable for manufacturing handoff, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and tolerance stack-ups.
Design components for sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, plastics, and injection molding.
Review CAD models for dimensional accuracy, manufacturability, and production readiness.
Prepare concise technical documentation and assembly instructions as reference materials for AI model training.
Incorporate technical review feedback into CAD models and supporting documentation.
Requirements
You should have at least two years of experience designing mechanical components in manufacturing environments, along with professional expertise in FreeCAD or similar parametric CAD software.
Prior AI training experience is not required. The key qualifications are advanced mechanical design capability, manufacturing knowledge, careful quality review, and the ability to communicate technical decisions clearly.
Professional experience with advanced parametric modeling, assemblies, and drawing generation in FreeCAD or comparable CAD software.
Mechanical component design experience in manufacturing environments.
Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, tolerance stack-ups, and Design for Manufacturing principles.
Experience producing production-grade CAD models and checking them against real-world manufacturing criteria.
Ability to verify models for dimensional accuracy, manufacturability, and production readiness.
Ability to create clear engineering drawings, assembly instructions, and technical documentation.
Experience with sheet metal, CNC machining, plastics, or injection molding is valuable.
Clear written and verbal communication skills for technical documentation and collaborative review.
Who Should Apply
This opportunity is suited to manufacturing-oriented mechanical designers and engineers who enjoy applying detailed technical judgment to emerging AI systems. It may be a strong fit if you have hands-on experience taking components from parametric design through manufacturing documentation and review.
The listed experience level is entry level, but the role description specifies at least two years of relevant manufacturing design experience and professional CAD expertise.
Manufacturing design engineers with strong FreeCAD experience
Mechanical CAD professionals experienced with assemblies and production drawings
Designers familiar with GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and Design for Manufacturing
