About OpenTrain
OpenTrain is the centralized, open platform where AI training and data-labeling freelancers find work, consolidate opportunities across platforms, and build a unified AI training portfolio they control. We make specialized AI training work easier to track, apply for, and grow into a durable freelance career.
Why work with OpenTrain
OpenTrain gives freelancers one place to manage AI training opportunities instead of rebuilding proof of work on every platform. A stronger OpenTrain profile helps you show credible experience, discover roles that match your skills, and turn AI training and data-labeling work into a long-term portfolio.
About this role
OpenTrain is recruiting for a CAD Assembly Design Expert to help develop high-quality training inputs for next-generation AI systems. This remote contractor role focuses on sophisticated multi-part assemblies and parametric modeling. You will apply expert judgment to design intent, assembly reasoning, manufacturability, and design feasibility, explaining why particular architectures, mating strategies, tolerances, and component placements are appropriate.
What you will do
Interpret product requirements and create robust, manufacturable multi-part assemblies using advanced parametric CAD methods. Create, annotate, optimize, and review 3D models and assemblies that demonstrate strong professional modeling practices. Make and explain decisions about assembly architecture, component placement, mating strategies, tolerance stack-ups, and design for manufacturability. Document design rationale, modeling best practices, trade-offs, and DFM considerations for AI learning workflows. Review sample designs and provide detailed feedback on modeling strategies, design intent, and feasibility. Clarify complex CAD decisions through clear written and verbal communication in an asynchronous working environment. Contribute mentoring or educational content that helps communicate expert CAD methods.
Required skills
Substantial professional CAD design experience involving complex multi-part assemblies is preferred, typically five or more years. Recognized credentials such as CSWE or CSWP, Autodesk Certified Instructor or Expert Elite, ASME GDTP, or SOLIDWORKS Champion may substitute for the formal experience bar. Demonstrated ownership of design decisions, including architecture, tolerances, mating strategies, and manufacturability, is valuable. Candidates should have mastery of a major parametric CAD package such as SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, Inventor, Fusion, Onshape, or Solid Edge. The role requires the ability to articulate design logic, trade-offs, and assembly intent in documentation and discussion, along with strong attention to detail and effective collaboration in remote and asynchronous professional settings.
Helpful background
Experience mentoring, teaching, or enabling other CAD users is valuable. Familiarity with FreeCAD is also useful, and prior AI experience is not required.
Compensation
