About AI Training and Robotics Data Collection

AI training is the human side of building intelligent systems. People collect, annotate, review, and evaluate the examples that help AI models understand the world and respond effectively. In robotics, real-world recordings and observations help systems learn how to interact with physical objects and environments.

  • Work directly with physical objects and robotic interfaces
  • Produce consistent recordings and observations for robot-learning systems
  • Contribute to cutting-edge AI development through careful data collection

The Role

OpenTrain is hiring a Robotics Data Collection Operator for an onsite contractor opportunity in a San Francisco lab. You will use a handheld UMI gripper device to perform simple household manipulation tasks, including picking up objects and opening containers.

The role combines precise physical execution with protocol adherence, submission quality checks, issue reporting, and observation capture. It is an entry-level opportunity requiring 20 or more hours per week, with an advertised rate of $10-$20 per hour.

  • Location: Onsite in San Francisco, California
  • Employment type: Contractor and part time
  • Availability: 20+ hours per week
  • Language: English
  • Pay: $10-$20 per hour

What You’ll Do

You will complete repeated manipulation tasks while maintaining accuracy, focus, and consistency. You will also help keep the physical collection environment ready, check submissions, and communicate problems to project leads and coordinators.

  • Operate a handheld gripper to pick up objects and open containers
  • Complete simple household manipulation tasks across varied objects and environments
  • Follow detailed written instructions and collection protocols exactly
  • Reset physical environments between task attempts
  • Verify the quality of each data submission
  • Identify hardware malfunctions, unclear instructions, and compromised recordings
  • Record observations and report equipment or recording problems clearly
  • Suggest process improvements and coordinate with project leads, coordinators, and contributors
  • Maintain concentration during extended periods of repetitive physical activity

Requirements

This role requires precise physical handling, careful attention to instructions, and reliable communication. You should be comfortable learning basic hardware interfaces, troubleshooting minor technical issues, and performing repetitive hands-on work for sustained periods.

Previous robotics or AI experience is not required. Experience in physical operations, object handling, warehouse work, gaming, gig work, or student projects may be helpful.

  • Fine motor control, dexterity, and precision when handling varied objects
  • Ability to follow detailed step-by-step protocols exactly and consistently
  • Physical stamina and sustained concentration during repetitive hands-on work
  • Ability to learn basic hardware interfaces and troubleshoot minor technical issues
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Reliability, punctuality, and personal accountability
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Comfort with repetitive hands-on tasks and basic technical troubleshooting

Who Should Apply

This opportunity may suit people who enjoy practical, hands-on work and can stay focused while repeating precise actions. It is also a potential entry point for contributors interested in AI training, robotics, physical operations, or data collection who do not yet have professional robotics experience.

  • People with strong dexterity and careful object-handling skills
  • Candidates who reliably follow detailed procedures
  • Contributors comfortable working onsite in a San Francisco lab
  • Applicants available for at least 20 hours per week
  • Those interested in building experience in robotics and AI training
