The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting a Python Backend Engineer for AI agent data. You will build and validate backend connectors that reproduce the behavior of SaaS tools, or turn real workflows into realistic long-horizon tasks with evaluation rubrics.

The project is a remote, four-week contractor engagement starting immediately. It is categorized as entry level, while the role requires at least three years of backend development experience and strong Python skills.

What You'll Do

You will contribute across software development, connector validation, task creation, and evaluation. The work requires careful implementation as well as the ability to judge whether an AI agent has completed a task correctly.

• Build Python backend applications that reproduce tools such as Slack, Linear, Jira, Notion, Gmail, and internal wikis.
• Test connectors for faithful behavior and extend existing integrations.
• Deliver new connectors against agreed milestones.
• Mine workflows and author realistic AI-agent tasks.
• Assess task quality, realism, and correctness.
• Write rubrics distinguishing correct, partially correct, and deficient work.
• Use AI coding agents during development, quality assurance, and validation.
• Participate in onboarding, calibration, and quality reviews.

Requirements

You should have strong backend engineering fundamentals and practical experience building reliable services. Experience designing SaaS integrations or translating real workflows into software tasks is helpful for contributing across either the connector or task track.

• At least three years of backend development experience.
• Strong Python skills.
• Experience with FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
• Experience building scalable backends, REST APIs, and microservices.
• Working knowledge of Git, Docker, pipelines, testing, and code-quality practices.
• Daily hands-on experience with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot.
• Ability to faithfully reproduce the behavior of existing SaaS tools.
• Ability to create realistic AI-agent tasks and structured evaluation criteria.

Payment and Engagement Details

This is a part-time contractor engagement with payment based on approved tasks. The engagement lasts four weeks and starts immediately.

• At least one completed and approved task per day is required.
• Additional tasks may be available while the project pipeline remains active.
