The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting a Python Backend AI Agent Engineer to build infrastructure and training data for AI agent development and evaluation. You will create backend applications that replicate realistic enterprise SaaS tools and develop environments where agents can interact with tools, data, and workflows.

This is a remote contractor assignment lasting five weeks. The expected commitment is at least 40 hours per week, including six hours of overlap with Pacific Time. The structured opportunity listing indicates a commitment of 20 or more hours per week.

What You'll Do

You will turn real-world enterprise workflows into working technical environments and precise AI agent evaluation tasks. The work includes application development, task authoring, testing, debugging, and quality assurance across unfamiliar technical contexts.

• Build Python backend applications that replicate tools such as Slack, Linear, Jira, Notion, Gmail, wikis, and other enterprise applications.
• Develop realistic digital environments where AI agents can interact with tools, data, and workflows.
• Author multi-step agent tasks and write evaluation rubrics.
• Validate tasks end to end and identify ambiguity, edge cases, and failure conditions.
• Reproduce and debug failures in applications, tasks, and agent workflows.
• Provide actionable feedback to other engineers.
• Use AI coding tools throughout development, testing, debugging, and quality assurance.

Required Skills

You should bring strong backend software engineering experience, primarily in Python, along with the judgment to translate real-world workflows into precise implementations and evaluation criteria. The role requires independent work across unfamiliar codebases and technical environments.

• Python backend experience involving application development, testing, debugging, and maintenance.
• Experience designing realistic SaaS integrations or digital work environments.
• Ability to translate workflows into technical implementations, multi-step agent tasks, evaluation rubrics, and quality assurance processes.
• Strong engineering judgment and written communication for documenting requirements, analyzing failures, and giving actionable feedback.
• Working knowledge of GCP, Docker, virtual machines, and Harbor.
• Daily proficiency with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar tools.

Preferred Experience

• Building or evaluating AI agents, LLM applications, or agentic systems.
