As the hiring organization for this role, OpenTrain runs projects that directly shape how state-of-the-art AI models behave. Creating an OpenTrain account is free and puts you on a fast track to steady, flexible work in a growing field.
About AI training and data-labeling work
AI training is the human side of building intelligent systems: people annotate, review, and correct model outputs so AI improves over time. This kind of work is accessible, often flexible, and sits at the cutting edge of how software learns.
Many contributors enjoy flexible scheduling and the opportunity to influence real model behavior—especially in programming tasks where precise, expert feedback has an outsized impact.
The role
We are seeking a Perl programming Subject Matter Expert (SME) based in India with C1-level English proficiency to help develop AI training datasets.
You will review, debug, and correct Perl code produced by AI models, and you will document and explain each correction so the model can learn better practices and more accurate solutions.
- Employment type: Contractor, part-time.
- Location requirement: Must be located in India.
- Weekly time commitment: Less than 20 hours per week.
- Pay: $20 USD per hour (PAY_PER_HOUR).
- Note: Although this listing may carry an 'Entry level' tag in some systems, this role requires 7+ years of professional Perl experience.
What you'll do (day-to-day)
Your work will focus on evaluating and improving AI-generated Perl code. Expect independent tasks where accuracy, clarity, and consistency matter.
You will provide concise written explanations for each correction so annotations can be used to train and evaluate models.
- Review AI-generated Perl scripts for correctness, style, security, and performance.
- Debug and correct code; produce minimal, production-minded fixes and alternatives.
- Write clear, structured explanations for each change so the model can learn the rationale.
- Rate model outputs for quality and adherence to best practices (evaluation/rating).
- Manage tasks independently and deliver consistent, high-quality annotations on schedule.
Requirements
Candidates must meet every listed requirement to be considered.
We preserve every substantive requirement from the project brief: please read carefully before applying.
- 7+ years of professional experience with the Perl programming language; be prepared to discuss what you built and maintained with Perl.
- C1-level English proficiency — strong written communication is essential for clear correction notes and explanations.
- Located in India (this role requires India-based applicants).
- Demonstrated experience debugging, documenting technical fixes, and explaining complex technical concepts in writing.
- Ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and deliver consistently high-quality output.
Interview, skills test, and screening
At the start of the interview you will be required to undergo a live coding/skill test and a live interview. Honesty and professionalism are mandatory: dishonesty during the interview process will result in a permanent ban from the OpenTrain AI platform.
During the interview you must provide clear answers to the screening questions listed below; these will be recorded in your AI interview summary.
- You will be asked to complete a timed coding/skill test in Perl and to discuss your approach in a live interview.
- If you are dishonest at any point in the interview or test, you will be permanently banned from OpenTrain AI.
- Screening questions to answer during the interview (answers will be included in the interview summary): What is your highest level of education? How many years of experience do you have with Perl? How many hours per week can you commit to the project if hired? (Provide an exact number, e.g., "18 hou
How to apply and next steps
Apply through your OpenTrain account and ensure your profile highlights your Perl experience with real-world examples and links or descriptions of projects you built or maintained.
Shortlisted candidates will receive instructions for the coding test and live interview. Be ready to provide the exact weekly hours you can commit if hired.
- Prepare examples of Perl projects you worked on and be ready to discuss specific technical decisions.
- Ensure your OpenTrain profile lists your location (India) and demonstrates C1-level English writing where possible.
