About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect people who teach AI with projects that shape how modern models behave. Creating an OpenTrain account is free.

About AI training work

AI training (data labeling/annotation) is the human side of building AI. Contributors create, review, and correct examples—like annotated code snippets, troubleshooting steps, and evaluation ratings—that models learn from.

This work is often 100% remote, flexible and accessible: many projects require domain knowledge or language skills rather than formal degrees, and contributors directly influence the behavior of cutting-edge systems.

Role overview

We are hiring an Operating Systems Subject Matter Expert (SME) based in India to develop and validate AI training datasets focused on traditional Operating System management and scripting.

You will document, explain, and refine tasks so AI models can accurately understand real-world OS scenarios, troubleshooting workflows, and automation scripts.

What you'll do

Produce clear, technically precise training data and documentation based on core OS concepts and real-world troubleshooting.

Write and review scripting examples (Bash, PowerShell, Python) and create evaluation prompts and ratings for code-related items.

Validate and correct candidate model outputs for accuracy, clarity, and best-practice alignment.

  • Draft step-by-step troubleshooting workflows and explanations for common OS issues.
  • Create scripts or script templates and describe their behavior and edge cases.
  • Review and improve dataset entries to ensure technical precision and consistency.
  • Provide written corrections and clarifications for ambiguous or incorrect examples.

Requirements

This role requires strong hands-on experience with Operating Systems and clear technical writing. Candidates must be located in India and demonstrate C1-level English proficiency.

At the start of the interview you will undergo a technical/skill test and a live interview; dishonesty during that process will result in a permanent ban from the OpenTrain platform.

  • 7+ years of professional experience managing and configuring Operating Systems (Windows, Linux, or Unix).
  • In-depth knowledge of system processes, kernel management, and resource allocation.
  • Proficiency with scripting (Bash, PowerShell, Python).
  • Experience with virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V, VirtualBox) and performance monitoring tools (htop, top, ps, Task Manager).
  • Familiarity with OS-level security practices and patch management.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to produce high-quality documentation independently.

Interview: required questions and technical test

You will face a live technical/skill test and interview. During the interview you must provide clear, exact answers to certain administrative questions and technical prompts; the interviewer will include these answers in your AI interview summary.

Do not be dishonest: any dishonesty discovered during the interview or test results in a permanent ban from OpenTrain.

  • Administrative questions you will be asked: highest level of education; total years of OS management/configuration experience; exact hours per week you can commit (an exact number or narrow range like "20-25 hours per week" — broad imprecise ranges are not acceptable).
  • Technical question 1 (Performance): Describe how you would identify and resolve high CPU usage on a Linux server where key services are unresponsive.
  • Technical question 2 (Scripting): Write a Bash or PowerShell script to monitor disk usage and automatically alert if usage exceeds 90%, and explain how it works.
  • Technical question 3 (Security): Explain steps to secure a newly installed Windows Server before production deployment.

Compensation, schedule, and contract

This is a part-time contractor role (contractor, part_time) paid per hour at USD 25.00/hour. The project expects less than 20 hours per week; you must state the exact number of hours you can commit during the interview.

Work is remote but candidates must be located in India. Labeling software will be "OTHER" and tasks include code/programming data and evaluation/rating.

  • Payment type: PAY_PER_HOUR at USD 25/hour.
  • Time requirement: Less than 20 hours/week; specify exact committed hours when interviewed.
  • Employment types: Contractor, Part-time.

How to apply

Apply with your OpenTrain profile and include a brief summary of your OS experience (examples of systems managed, scripting languages used, virtualization platforms, and monitoring tools).

Be prepared for an immediate technical test and live interview where you'll answer the administrative and technical questions listed above.

  • Include examples of real-world troubleshooting or optimization tasks you've completed.
  • Confirm that you are located in India and have C1 English proficiency.
  • State the exact number of hours per week you can commit if hired.
