The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking highly skilled Open Source Contributors with strong software engineering backgrounds. You will contribute to an AI training project involving software development, repository exploration, debugging, system architecture, and code evaluation.

The project includes creating, solving, reviewing, and validating challenging software engineering tasks across front-end and back-end systems. You may also help translate complete coding builds from one programming language into another.

• Pay: $100-$150 USD per hour
• Typical rate: $130 USD per hour
• Time commitment: under 20 hours per week
• Schedule: flexible hours and days, including weekends if needed
• Project duration: expected to be 1 to 3 months

What You'll Work On

You will work across unfamiliar codebases and evaluate software tasks that require careful technical reasoning. The work may span front-end and back-end components, system architecture, APIs, databases, libraries, infrastructure, and external dependencies.

• Explore and understand unfamiliar software repositories.
• Implement, modify, and debug front-end and back-end components.
• Trace data and execution across interfaces, services, libraries, APIs, databases, and external dependencies.
• Reproduce software issues and identify their underlying causes.
• Implement solutions that fit an existing project's architecture and contribution standards.
• Write unit, integration, regression, and end-to-end tests.
• Create, solve, review, and validate challenging software engineering tasks.
• Review AI-generated patches for correctness, completeness, security, and maintainability.
• Help translate complete coding builds from one programming language into another.

Required Qualifications

This is an expert-level opportunity for engineers who can demonstrate substantial, hands-on software development ability. Your open-source record should show meaningful engineering contributions rather than only minor maintenance activity.

• Public or otherwise verifiable GitHub profile
• Meaningful ownership of or contributions to one or more open-source repositories
• Strong software engineering experience in front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, developer tooling, infrastructure, or another substantial technical area
• Experience with multiple programming languages
• Ability to understand and modify unfamiliar codebases
• Ability to discuss specific repositories, pull requests, issues, and code you personally authored
• Contributions that demonstrate real engineering ability, beyond documentation updates, dependency bumps, formatting changes, or minor typo corrections
