The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Medical Coding AI Training Expert to support accurate medical record annotation and review. You will combine professional coding judgment with careful evaluation of data used to improve AI model understanding.

This is an entry-level project classification, but the role requires an active AAPC Certified Professional Coder certification, current coding knowledge, and practical experience handling varied clinical documentation and coding challenges.

What You'll Do

  • Annotate and review medical records for accurate ICD-10 and CPT code assignment.
  • Apply official Evaluation and Management leveling guidelines to validate and enrich datasets.
  • Use current coding references to stay aligned with applicable coding standards.
  • Clarify ambiguous clinical documentation through written and verbal communication.
  • Identify coding edge cases and explain the reasoning behind code assignments.
  • Provide feedback on coding guidelines, edge cases, and workflow improvements.
  • Help create and validate medical code datasets for AI training.

Required Qualifications

You should be comfortable applying established coding systems and guidelines to clinical documentation, including ambiguous or complex cases. Clear communication and close attention to detail are essential for producing reliable training data.

  • Active AAPC Certified Professional Coder certification
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding systems
  • Practical understanding of Evaluation and Management leveling guidelines
  • Experience with varied clinical documentation and related coding challenges
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Access to current official ICD-10, CPT, and E&M reference materials
  • Current credential knowledge and a commitment to continued learning

Helpful Background

Familiarity with digital annotation tools or prior participation in data-driven projects is helpful. Success in this role also depends on accurate work, up-to-date coding knowledge, and the ability to communicate documentation requirements and coding standards clearly.
