The Mechanical Engineering Expert Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Expert for a global, fully remote contractor project expected to last 1 to 3 months. You will create, solve, review, and validate engineering tasks across structural, thermal, mechanical, and multiphysics domains.

This role is expected to require less than 20 hours per week, approximately 15 hours, with flexible scheduling and weekend work permitted. Compensation is $80 to $130 per hour, output-based and paid per task.

What You'll Do

You will use strong mechanical-engineering judgment to develop reliable reference solutions and objective validation checks. The work combines analytical reasoning, computational modeling, simulation review, design iteration, and evaluation of AI-generated engineering responses.

  • Solve and validate mechanical-engineering problems involving design, analysis, simulation, testing, or R&D
  • Translate physical systems and engineering requirements into analytical or computational models
  • Create or modify geometry, meshes, materials, loads, contacts, constraints, and solver inputs
  • Perform structural, thermal, dynamic, fatigue, buckling, vibration, or related analyses
  • Use Python to automate model preparation, simulation, parameter sweeps, optimization, postprocessing, and verification
  • Analyze stress, strain, displacement, temperature, heat flow, deformation, frequency response, safety factors, and related outputs
  • Compare simulations with hand calculations, experimental data, reference cases, or expected physical behavior
  • Diagnose invalid geometry, mesh problems, convergence failures, incorrect boundary conditions, and unrealistic outputs
  • Review AI-generated engineering solutions for reasoning errors, incorrect assumptions, and violated physical constraints
  • Improve designs for performance, mass, strength, stiffness, thermal behavior, reliability, or manufacturability

Required Qualifications and Technical Skills

You should have advanced mechanical-engineering knowledge and practical experience creating analytical, computational, or simulation-based solutions. You must be able to select and justify loads, boundary conditions, material properties, and model fidelity.

Engineering software experience must include code, scripts, configuration files, command-line interfaces, or programmatic APIs. GUI-only experience is not sufficient. Fluent English proficiency and comfort working in English are required.

  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, or BS in Mechanical Engineering plus 1 to 2 years of relevant professional experience
  • Relevant experience in mechanical design, analysis, simulation, testing, or R&D
  • Strong understanding of applied mechanics and mechanical-engineering fundamentals
  • Practical proficiency in Python
  • Experience with CLI, scripting, text-based inputs, or programmatic APIs for engineering, geometry, meshing, or simulation tools
  • Potential tools include CalculiX, Gmsh, Elmer, FEniCSx, CadQuery, OpenSCAD, and OpenFOAM
  • Experience with NumPy, SciPy, SymPy, pandas, Matplotlib, Jupyter, CAD or meshing APIs, finite-element libraries, or optimization packages
  • Fluent English and comfort working in English
