The Role
OpenTrain is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Simulation AI Trainer to create, solve, and validate engineering tasks for an AI training project. You will develop computational models, run analyses, and evaluate AI-generated solutions across structural, thermal, mechanical, and multiphysics domains.
This is a flexible, worldwide remote contractor role for about 15 hours per week, or less than 20 hours weekly. The position is listed as entry level, while the work requires the specified academic or professional mechanical engineering background.

What You’ll Do
You will turn physical engineering requirements into reproducible computational tasks and assess both the process and results. Your work will combine simulation, Python automation, engineering troubleshooting, and careful review of AI-generated reasoning.
Create and modify geometry, meshes, materials, loads, contacts, and solver inputs for engineering simulations.
Perform structural, thermal, dynamic, fatigue, buckling, vibration, and related analyses using command-line-accessible tools.
Use Python to automate model preparation, simulations, parameter sweeps, optimization, postprocessing, and verification.
Analyze simulation outputs and compare them with hand calculations, experimental data, or reference cases.
Diagnose invalid geometry, mesh problems, convergence failures, and unrealistic outputs.
Review AI-generated engineering solutions for reasoning errors, incorrect assumptions, and violated physical constraints.
Develop clear, reproducible reference solutions and objective validation checks.
Required Qualifications
You should have advanced academic training or relevant professional experience in mechanical engineering, along with practical simulation and Python skills. Strong communication and troubleshooting ability are important because you will need to explain engineering decisions and trade-offs clearly.
Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, or a bachelor’s degree plus at least 1 to 2 years of relevant professional experience.
Strong understanding of applied mechanics and mechanical engineering fundamentals.
Practical proficiency with Python for engineering automation and simulation.
Experience with at least one command-line-accessible engineering simulation tool, such as CalculiX, Gmsh, Elmer, FEniCSx, or OpenFOAM.
Ability to translate physical requirements into computational models and validate simulation results.
Ability to review AI-generated engineering solutions and identify reasoning errors.
Strong troubleshooting and communication skills.
Helpful Background

Experience with NumPy, SciPy, SymPy, pandas, Matplotlib, or Jupyter.
