AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human side of building modern AI: people prepare, transcribe, and review examples that models learn from. Contributors shape how systems understand language by producing high-quality bilingual transcripts and translations.

This role focuses on Japanese↔English audio and text: your work improves model performance on transcription, translation, and language understanding tasks while offering flexible, remote, part-time contractor work.

The Role

OpenTrain is hiring a Japanese-English Transcription Specialist to transcribe, review, and edit audio and written materials between Japanese and English. You will deliver polished bilingual transcripts, preserve meaning and context, and provide linguistic feedback that raises overall quality for transcription workflows.

• Transcribe audio and written materials accurately between Japanese and English.
• Review and edit transcripts to preserve meaning, nuance, and context.
• Provide clear linguistic feedback to improve transcription processes and guidelines.
• Manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines with consistent quality.
• Communicate clearly with teammates in written and verbal channels.

Requirements

To succeed in this role you must be bilingual, detail-oriented, and comfortable working as an independent contractor in a remote team environment. This position is entry level but requires strong language skills and real transcription or translation experience.

• Native or near-native Japanese proficiency (speaking, listening, reading, writing).
• Strong command of English, including comprehension and written expression.
• Experience transcribing or translating between Japanese and English.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both languages.
• Proficiency with transcription tools and digital collaboration platforms.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills; able to meet deadlines.

Helpful background (preferred)

• Prior bilingual transcription experience or professional translation work.
• Familiarity with technical terminology across industries or subject-matter areas.
• Academic background in language studies, linguistics, translation, or a related field.

Compensation, schedule, and employment type

This is a part-time contractor role with a recommended commitment of 20+ hours per week. Pay is hourly on a pay-per-hour basis.

Pay range: $30–$65 USD per hour. Employment type: Contractor, Part-time. Work is remote and open worldwide; you will manage tasks and schedules within project deadlines.
