The role — COBOL Code Review Specialist

As a COBOL Code Review Specialist you will convert legacy mainframe logic into clear, model-ready artifacts: annotations, technical documentation, test scenarios, and edge-case descriptions that help train and evaluate AI systems that understand business logic in COBOL codebases.

This is remote contractor work with an expected minimum commitment of 20+ hours per week. Pay is hourly at $90 to $126 depending on the task and expertise required.

What you’ll do

• Analyze existing COBOL codebases and interpret business logic for AI training data creation.
• Review COBOL scripts, pseudo-code, and example scenarios and translate them into annotated training items.
• Document workflows, business rules, and technical behavior clearly and accurately for model consumption.
• Identify edge cases, ambiguities, and requirements that need expert feedback or additional clarification.
• Design test cases and scenario outlines reflecting real-world COBOL applications and operational behavior.
• Collaborate with technical coordinators, submit polished written materials, and contribute to dataset quality reviews.

Requirements

The role requires strong COBOL domain expertise and the ability to produce clear technical documentation and model-ready annotations. You must be comfortable working independently and managing remote deliverables.

• Deep COBOL development experience across business domains.
• Ability to analyze and explain legacy mainframe logic and workflows.
• Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
• Skill identifying edge cases, ambiguities, and scenarios requiring domain clarification.
• Clear written and verbal communication in English.
• Familiarity with mainframe environments and related tooling is a plus.

Schedule, pay, and project logistics

This is contract, part-time work. OpenTrain will estimate project duration and expected earnings when a role is assigned.

Compensation is hourly: $90 to $126 USD per hour. Expected time commitment is 20+ hours per week; actual hours depend on project needs and your availability.
