About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help people start and grow careers teaching AI by discovering projects, building a unified portfolio, and applying in minutes — creating an enduring freelance path in a fast-growing field.

OpenTrain AI is the hiring and contracting organization for this role. Creating an OpenTrain account is free and gives you access to projects where your domain expertise directly shapes how AI systems learn and perform.

Why AI training work matters

AI systems learn from human-created examples. Tasks like analyzing code, explaining logic, and rating outputs provide the ground truth models use to reason and improve. This is accessible, cutting-edge remote work that fits around other commitments.

Many projects are flexible and remote; they reward domain knowledge rather than prior AI experience. Contributors help build safer, more capable AI while working part-time or as contractors.

  • 100% remote: work from anywhere with a computer and internet connection.
  • Flexible, part-time contractor work that fits around other commitments.
  • Direct impact: your COBOL expertise shapes next-generation AI behavior.

The role

You will work as a COBOL Code Analysis and AI Training Specialist, using your COBOL domain knowledge to analyze, document, and explain legacy application code. Your written and verbal inputs will form the training and evaluation data that teaches AI systems to understand and reason about legacy environments.

This is a contractor, part-time role requiring 20+ hours per week. No previous AI or labeling experience is required — we value your COBOL experience, clarity of explanation, and attention to detail.

  • Position type: Contractor, Part-time (20+ hours/week)
  • Work location: Remote, worldwide (English required)
  • Experience level: Entry level (domain expertise in COBOL is required)

What you'll do

  • Analyze, interpret, and document COBOL code for legacy system applications.
  • Explain program logic, data flows, and integration points in clear written and verbal English.
  • Provide high-quality, detailed input in response to project-specific prompts and tasks.
  • Contribute to creation and refinement of AI training datasets through data collection and evaluation rating tasks.
  • Review and clarify technical requirements and specifications to ensure accurate model understanding.
  • Collaborate virtually with project managers and technical stakeholders to meet deliverables and milestones.
  • Participate in feedback sessions to iteratively improve outputs and model performance.

Requirements

You must be able to read and explain COBOL code and legacy system artifacts clearly and methodically. Strong English communication and attention to detail are essential.

  • Proficiency in COBOL programming and experience reading legacy code.
  • Experience with mainframe or midrange environments (or equivalent exposure to COBOL deployments).
  • Ability to explain program logic, data flows, and integration points in clear written and verbal English.
  • Experience interpreting legacy system documentation and business logic.
  • Methodical approach to code analysis, documentation, and quality-focused work.

Helpful (but not required) background

  • Familiarity with data processing, batch operations, or transaction management in COBOL.
  • Curiosity about AI systems and willingness to work on innovative technology initiatives.
  • Prior experience collaborating on remote, cross-functional technical projects.

Compensation, labeling work & how to apply

Pay is hourly: $90–$120 per hour (project rates vary within this range). Work is paid per hour as a contractor. Tasks involve text-based data (DATA_COLLECTION and EVALUATION_RATING) focused on COBOL artifacts and explanations.

To apply, create or sign in to your OpenTrain account, complete your profile with relevant COBOL experience, and submit your application. OpenTrain manages contracting and payment for this project.

  • Pay type: PAY_PER_HOUR (USD $90–$120/hr)
  • Data type: TEXT; label types: DATA_COLLECTION, EVALUATION_RATING
  • Employment: Contractor, Part-time
