The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Civil Engineering Task and Rubric Specialist to create realistic technical tasks and evaluation materials for next-generation AI systems. You will work across structural design, transportation, water systems, and site development, incorporating real-world constraints, regulatory requirements, and nuanced engineering judgment.

This is a part-time contractor role requiring 20+ hours per week. Compensation is $50-$100 per hour, and the work is conducted in English.

What You’ll Do

You will develop technical evaluation content that reflects the complexity and documentation standards of professional civil engineering projects. Your work will support both the creation of challenging AI tasks and the consistent assessment of AI-generated answers.

• Design and author civil engineering evaluation tasks based on complex professional scenarios.
• Source, generate, and curate engineering drawings, geotechnical reports, specifications, cost estimates, and regulatory code references.
• Develop technical problems involving geometric constraints, code compliance, and nuanced engineering judgment.
• Determine accurate solutions and verify that applicable engineering and regulatory requirements are satisfied.
• Create comprehensive rubrics for grading AI-generated solutions for technical correctness and code adherence.
• Produce and validate realistic CSV, PDF, and spreadsheet files that represent project documentation.
• Refine task clarity, realism, and evaluation standards with project stakeholders.

Requirements

This opportunity is intended for civil engineers with substantial professional project experience and the ability to explain technical decisions clearly. Previous AI training experience is not required; practical civil engineering expertise and high-quality technical judgment are the priority.

• At least five years of professional civil engineering project experience across diverse domains.
• Strong capability in technical documentation, design specifications, and code-compliance materials.
• Experience sourcing and interpreting regulatory codes and applying them to engineering solutions.
• Ability to review complex drawings, reports, datasets, and other technical artifacts.
• Ability to produce or review drawings, geotechnical reports, specifications, cost estimates, and project data files.
• Ability to create technically rigorous evaluation rubrics for AI-generated engineering solutions.
• Strong written communication and the ability to explain engineering judgments through clear evaluation materials.

Preferred Background

A Professional Engineer license or active pursuit of licensure is strongly preferred. The role values professionals who can translate authentic project experience into precise tasks, realistic documentation, and defensible evaluation standards.
