About OpenTrain
OpenTrain is the centralized, open platform where AI training and data-labeling freelancers find work, consolidate opportunities across platforms, and build a unified AI training portfolio they control. We make specialized AI training work easier to track, apply for, and grow into a durable freelance career.
About this role
OpenTrain is recruiting for a Civil and Structural Engineering AI Evaluator to create realistic engineering problems and assess AI-generated technical work. You will apply hands-on experience from civil or structural engineering to review calculations, assumptions, models, quantities, estimates, design recommendations, code compliance, fabrication-accurate modeling, and applied analysis. Your feedback will help improve how AI systems reason about real engineering practice, construction workflows, and technical deliverables.
What you will do
- Create expert-level civil and structural engineering scenarios based on real design, modeling, estimating, construction, and project workflows
- Review AI-generated responses for technical accuracy, practical feasibility, industry-standard alignment, and real-world applicability
- Evaluate calculations, assumptions, models, quantities, estimates, and design recommendations for technical soundness
- Assess work involving structural design, code compliance, fabrication-accurate modeling, quantity takeoffs, estimating, and applied engineering analysis
- Provide clear, structured written feedback that identifies issues and supports stronger AI model performance
Required skills
- Recent professional experience as a civil or structural engineer, either currently or within the past three years
- BS, MS, or PhD in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field
- Hands-on ownership of models, calculations, quantities, estimates, construction documentation, or other technical deliverables used to build, price, review, or approve work
- Strong written communication, attention to detail, and the ability to explain complex civil and structural engineering concepts clearly
- Technical depth in at least one area such as code-based structural design, fabrication-accurate modeling, quantity takeoff, estimating, applied simulation, construction documentation, or building and infrastructure design
Helpful background
PE licensure or EIT certification, experience applying building codes and structural standards, and familiarity with engineering tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, Tekla Structures, SAP2000, ETABS, STAAD.Pro, RAM Structural System, or RISA are useful. Experience with steel, reinforced concrete, timber, masonry, foundations, specialty structures, BIM workflows, quantity surveying, cost modeling, takeoff software, detailing, or multidisciplinary coordination is also relevant. Background at an engineering consultancy, architecture and engineering firm, contractor, EPC firm, construction company, or infrastructure organization may be helpful.
Work arrangement
This is ongoing, project-based contract work that can be completed alongside a current role. The work is remote and asynchronous, with a self-directed schedule and no minimum time requirement. Applicants must be based in the United States.
Compensation
The opportunity offers up to $90 per hour.
