About AI Training Work

AI systems learn from examples created and reviewed by people with real subject-matter expertise. In this role, your structural engineering judgment will help train models to reason through technical problems, produce sound solutions, and communicate decisions clearly.

  • Contribute directly to the development of advanced AI systems
  • Apply specialized engineering knowledge to practical model evaluation
  • Build experience in a rapidly growing AI training industry
  • Work remotely with flexible part-time scheduling

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Structural Engineering AI Task Creator to turn practical engineering judgment into structured training tasks for AI systems. You will create realistic challenges involving structural analysis, seismic design, simulation, code compliance, reinforced concrete, steel connections, and retrofit.

The work combines structural engineering expertise with technical writing, deterministic scoring, reference solutions, and careful evaluation of AI-generated responses. You will assess whether answers are technically accurate and engineering-sound, then provide feedback that improves model performance.

  • Role focus: structural engineering AI task creation and evaluation
  • Data type: text
  • Primary activities: text generation and evaluation or rating
  • Experience level listed: entry level

What You'll Do

You will design well-scoped AI training tasks based on real structural engineering problems and write precise problem statements that test reasoning about structural behavior. Your work will establish clear expectations for correct answers and help distinguish technically sound solutions from flawed ones.

  • Create realistic structural analysis and design challenges
  • Develop deterministic checkers and trusted reference solutions
  • Use OpenSees and related structural engineering knowledge to build scenarios
  • Review AI-generated answers for technical accuracy and engineering soundness
  • Evaluate work against ACI 318, AISC, and Eurocode standards
  • Provide structured feedback identifying technical errors
  • Explain technical decisions clearly and consistently

Requirements

Applicants should have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related discipline, along with applied experience in structural analysis and design from professional or research settings. The role requires strong written English communication and the ability to work independently.

You should be comfortable formulating unambiguous engineering problems and evaluating technical correctness. Familiarity with structural analysis standards and advanced seismic or nonlinear methods is important for creating credible training content.

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related discipline
  • Applied experience with structural analysis and design
  • Proficiency with OpenSees
  • Familiarity with tools such as ETABS or SAP2000
  • Working knowledge of ACI 318, AISC 360, or relevant Eurocode standards
  • Understanding of pushover analysis, response spectrum analysis, nonlinear modeling, or performance-based design
  • Ability to write precise problem statements and evaluate technical correctness
  • Strong written English communication
  • Ability to work independently

Helpful Background

Additional experience can help you create more sophisticated and realistic engineering tasks, though the required qualifications remain the core basis for the role.

  • Finite element analysis beyond commercial software
  • OpenSees Tcl or Python scripting
  • Seismic assessment or retrofit design
  • Performance-based earthquake engineering
  • Reinforcement learning or prompt engineering
  • AI training workflow experience
  • Professional registration
  • Published research
  • Engineering education experience
