About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help contributors discover specialized AI training projects, build a lasting proof-of-work portfolio, and grow a freelance career focused on the human side of AI.

For this role, OpenTrain is the hiring and contracting organization: you will join a network of contributors shaping how chemistry knowledge is represented and taught to advanced AI models.

The AI training opportunity

AI training (data labeling / annotation) is the human work that teaches models to reason, explain, and solve problems. Contributors create examples, rate outputs, and write detailed explanations that become training data for generative models.

This role focuses on high-level chemistry reasoning: your work will directly improve how models handle organic mechanisms, thermodynamics, stoichiometry, electrochemistry, and advanced problem solving.

The role

You will create advanced chemistry problems and produce clear, structured solutions that combine text with equations, diagrams, and annotated chemical structures. Tasks include authoring problems, solving them step-by-step, annotating mechanisms, and reviewing content for clarity and rigor.

Employment type: Contractor, part-time. Time requirement: 20+ hours per week. Language: English. Location: remote, worldwide.

What you'll do

  • Create advanced chemistry problems and solve them with step-by-step reasoning.
  • Write detailed explanations combining narrative text with visuals, chemical equations, and diagrams.
  • Analyze organic reaction mechanisms and annotate chemical structures.
  • Work through problems in equilibrium, thermodynamics, stoichiometry, and electrochemistry.
  • Review and improve chemistry content for clarity, structure, and analytical rigor.
  • Evaluate model-generated responses and provide ratings and structured feedback to guide fine-tuning.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the substantive technical and communication requirements below. The role expects the ability to author and verify advanced solutions with high accuracy and pedagogical clarity.

  • Strong foundation in chemistry at a PhD-level standard (explicitly required).
  • Experience or advanced study in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Ability to explain complex chemistry concepts in simple, structured language.
  • Strong analytical thinking, research skills, and attention to detail.
  • Comfort working independently in a remote setup and providing constructive feedback.
  • Strong English comprehension and structured scientific writing.
  • Experience explaining reaction mechanisms, equilibrium, thermodynamics, or electrochemistry clearly.
  • Experience level: Intermediate (role requires advanced subject-matter knowledge).

Helpful background

  • Physical chemistry and thermodynamics.
  • Advanced organic chemistry, including mechanisms.
  • Inorganic chemistry and structure annotation.
  • Experience creating visual explanations and annotated diagrams for chemical problems.

How the work is structured

This project centers on text-based training data that includes structured problem statements, stepwise solutions, and references to visuals (equations, diagrams, annotated structures). You will both generate new examples (text generation) and evaluate/rate model outputs (evaluation rating).

Deliverables typically include problem prompts, full worked solutions, annotated diagrams or structure labels, and evaluation ratings or comments on model responses. OpenTrain will provide task guidelines and quality criteria.

  • Data type: TEXT (with diagrams and structure annotations referenced in text).
  • Labeling tasks: TEXT_GENERATION and EVALUATION_RATING.
  • Expected weekly commitment: 20+ hours.
  • Employment: Contractor, Part-time. Remote and worldwide. English required.

Who should apply and next steps

Apply if you are comfortable solving and explaining postgraduate-level chemistry problems, enjoy creating educationally clear solutions, and want to contribute to how generative models learn domain expertise. This is a great fit for researchers, postdocs, or experienced practitioners seeking flexible remote work.

To apply, create or update your OpenTrain profile, highlight relevant chemistry experience and examples of worked problems or annotated diagrams, and submit your application through the OpenTrain platform.
