Why AI Training Work Matters

AI training (data labeling/annotation) is the human side of building intelligent systems: people prepare and evaluate examples that teach models how to reason, answer, and solve problems. Contributors directly shape how state-of-the-art AI behaves while working remotely and flexibly.

This role focuses on assessment content for models targeting technical domains — a great opportunity to influence model performance in mechanical engineering while doing work that fits around other commitments.

The Role

You will create high-quality single-choice assessment questions, detailed answer rationales, and revised assessment items across mechanical engineering topics. Work emphasizes technical rigor, real-world applicability, and careful quality review of contributed materials.

This is a remote contractor, part-time engagement with an expected minimum commitment of 20+ hours per week. You will coordinate with the OpenTrain project team, meet milestones, and keep assignment records organized in digital workflow tools.

What You'll Do

  • Write clear, accurate single-choice questions grounded in mechanical engineering concepts.
  • Draft concise answer rationales and explanations that support the correct choice and illuminate common misconceptions.
  • Convert advanced technical knowledge into accessible assessment content suitable for AI training datasets.
  • Review, revise, and quality-check contributed items based on feedback and established guidelines.
  • Maintain precise records of assignments, submissions, and revisions using digital workflow tools.
  • Coordinate remotely to deliver milestones on schedule and communicate progress to the project team.

Requirements

This role requires strong domain expertise and excellent technical writing skills. All required details below are part of the role.

Experience creating educational or assessment content is highly desirable but not strictly required if other qualifications are met.

  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering (required).
  • Specialization in Solid & Structural Mechanics, Dynamics, Vibration & Control, or Thermal-Fluids.
  • Ability to explain complex mechanical engineering concepts clearly in writing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to technical accuracy.
  • Experience in educational content creation, assessment design, or technical writing is highly desirable.
  • Comfort working independently in a remote contractor role and familiarity with collaborative online platforms or workflow tools is helpful.

Compensation, Time, and Format

Pay: Hourly, USD $50–70 per hour (hourlyRate listed as $70; range $50–$70).

Time commitment: 20+ hours per week. Employment type: contractor, part-time. This is a remote, worldwide-friendly role; English proficiency is required.

  • Data type: Text — you will produce assessment questions and rationales (label types: text generation, question answering).
  • Work is delivered and tracked using digital workflow tools; you will coordinate to meet project milestones.

How to Apply & Who Should Apply

Apply through OpenTrain by creating or updating your profile and submitting your interest for this Mechanical Engineering Question Writer role. Include examples of technical writing, assessment content, or relevant past work if available.

Ideal applicants are experienced mechanical engineers (MS/PhD) who are skilled at translating technical knowledge into clear assessment items, comfortable working remotely as contractors, and motivated to contribute to high-quality AI training datasets.
