About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect skilled contributors with projects that shape how modern AI systems learn from people.

Working with OpenTrain means contributing directly to the examples and critiques that teach AI how to behave — a chance to influence cutting-edge models while building a flexible, remote-friendly career.

About AI training work

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human side of building AI. Contributors prepare, correct, and evaluate examples — from code snippets to written explanations — so models learn accurate, real-world behavior.

This kind of work is often flexible and accessible: many projects are part-time or contractor roles, let you set hours, and require domain knowledge and clear communication rather than formal degrees.

The role

We are hiring a System Administrator Subject Matter Expert (SME) based in India with C1-level English to help develop high-quality AI training datasets. You will document, explain, and correct traditional system administration tasks and workflows so models can understand and reproduce real-world sysadmin scenarios.

This is a contractor, part-time engagement paying $25 USD per hour. The project expects at least 20+ hours per week; during interview you must state the exact number of hours you can commit. Work involves both creating code examples and rating/evaluating model outputs (computer code/programming and evaluation/rating tasks).

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time
  • Pay: $25 USD per hour (PAY_PER_HOUR)
  • Location requirement: Must be located in India
  • Language requirement: C1-level English
  • Expected weekly commitment: 20+ hours per week (exact hours to be specified during interview)

What you’ll do

Use your practical sysadmin experience to create clear, accurate examples and explanations that teach AI how to perform and reason about system administration tasks.

Review and rate model outputs, provide corrections and explanations, and document best-practice workflows so training data reflects industry-standard operations.

  • Document server and OS administration workflows, runbooks, and troubleshooting steps.
  • Write and review scripts (Bash, PowerShell, Python) and explain their logic for training examples.
  • Evaluate and correct model responses for technical accuracy and clarity.
  • Provide precise, well-structured explanations and corrections for dataset entries.
  • Ensure technical integrity and consistency across training examples.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the following mandatory qualifications. We will verify technical skills during a live test and interview.

  • 7+ years professional experience in System Administration.
  • Located in India (applicants must be based in India).
  • C1 level English proficiency.
  • Strong foundation in server management, operating systems (Linux, Windows Server), and network basics.
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Bash, PowerShell, or Python.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), virtualization (VMware/Hyper-V) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of security protocols, firewalls, VPNs, patch management, and troubleshooting.
  • Attention to detail, strong documentation skills, and the ability to work independently.

Interview and evaluation process

All candidates will undergo a live technical skill test and a live interview as part of evaluation. At the start of the interview you will be informed of that requirement; dishonesty during the interview or test will result in permanent ban from the OpenTrain AI platform.

During the interview you will be asked to provide the following items and those answers must be included in the AI interview summary: highest level of education, total years of system administration experience, and the exact number of hours per week you can commit if hired.

  • Technical prompts that will be asked in the interview (applicants should be prepared to answer live):
  • 1) Troubleshooting scenario: Explain your step-by-step approach to diagnosing and resolving a web server experiencing slow performance and intermittent timeouts.
  • 2) Scripting/automation task: Write a Bash or PowerShell script to automate daily system backups to a secure remote location and explain your approach.
  • 3) Network/security best practices: Describe initial steps to secure a newly deployed production Linux server.

How to apply

Apply on OpenTrain with your profile and resume. In your application, briefly summarize your most relevant system administration projects and confirm you are based in India and have C1-level English.

Be prepared to take a live skills test and interview. If you proceed to interview, you must answer the required profile questions and technical prompts and provide exact weekly availability.

  • Include a short summary of major infrastructure projects you’ve worked on.
  • State your exact weekly availability you would commit if hired (e.g., "20-25 hours per week").
  • You may be asked to share short code samples or examples during the interview.
