OpenTrain is the #1 platform for building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect experienced contributors with meaningful, technical projects that teach AI systems how to think and behave.
Work with a global community of annotators and subject-matter experts to create the examples and feedback modern AI models use to learn. OpenTrain roles are remote, flexible, and focused on real technical skills.
About AI training work
AI training (data labeling / annotation / human feedback) is the human side of building artificial intelligence: people prepare, correct, and evaluate examples so models learn to replicate real-world expertise.
This role focuses on creating coding and systems-level datasets and evaluating model outputs so models understand Operating Systems concepts and troubleshooting workflows accurately.
The role
We are looking for an Operating Systems Subject Matter Expert (SME) based in India with C1-level English to help generate, review, and refine AI training data about traditional Operating Systems management.
You will document and explain OS concepts, create high-quality examples and scripts, and review model outputs and corrections so training data is precise, accurate, and usable by engineers and models.
Contract, part-time (contractor) — less than 20 hours per week
Pay: USD $25 per hour (PAY_PER_HOUR)
Work is remote but candidates must be located in India
What you'll do
Produce and polish training examples, step-by-step workflows, and scripted solutions that reflect real-world OS administration tasks.
Review and evaluate model-generated responses and human annotations to ensure technical accuracy and clarity.
Write and document scripts and code snippets (Bash, PowerShell, Python) for dataset examples
Create troubleshooting guides and performance-optimization scenarios for Linux, Windows, or Unix systems
Evaluate and rate candidate/model responses for correctness and clarity (label types: COMPUTER_PROGRAMMING_CODING, EVALUATION_RATING)
Document corrections and clarifications to improve dataset quality and consistency
Requirements
You must meet all location and core expertise requirements to be considered.
We will verify experience and conduct a technical screening as part of the hiring process.
Located in India (required)
C1-level English proficiency (required)
7+ years professional experience managing and configuring Operating Systems (Windows, Linux, or Unix)
Strong foundation in OS principles: processes, kernel management, resource allocation, performance optimization
Proficiency in scripting (Bash, PowerShell, Python)
Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V, VirtualBox)
Familiarity with system performance monitoring tools (htop, top, ps, Task Manager)
Knowledge of OS-level security practices and patch management
Excellent documentation skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently
Interview, testing & honesty policy
At the start of the interview you will be required to complete a technical/skill test and participate in a live interview. Passing both is required to be considered for the role.
Be honest: any dishonest behavior during the interview or test will result in permanent banishment from the OpenTrain AI platform.
You must be prepared to provide the following profile details during the interview and they will be included in the AI interview summary: highest level of education; exact years of experience managing/configuring Operating Systems; exact number of hours per week you can commit (an exact figure, not
During the interview you will be asked the following technical questions (your answers will be recorded in the AI interview summary):
Question 1: "A server running a Linux operating system is experiencing high CPU usage, and key services are becoming unresponsive. Walk me through how you would identify and resolve the issue."
Question 2: "Write a Bash or PowerShell script to monitor disk space usage on a server and automatically send an alert if usage exceeds 90%."
Question 3: "What steps would you take to secure a newly installed Windows Server operating system before deploying it to production?"
Hours, pay and employment type
This is a contract, part-time role expected to be less than 20 hours per week. During the interview you must state the exact number of hours per week you can commit if hired.
Compensation is USD $25 per hour, paid per hour as a contractor.
Employment types: CONTRACTOR, PART_TIME
Payment: PAY_PER_HOUR — USD $25/hour
Who should apply
Experienced OS engineers, sysadmins, site reliability engineers, and senior support engineers with a passion for clear documentation and teaching technical concepts to machines should apply.
If you meet the location, language, and experience requirements and enjoy creating precise, reproducible technical examples, this role is a strong fit.
How to apply & next steps
Apply via OpenTrain and be prepared for a two-part screening: a timed technical test and a live interview where you will answer the profile and technical questions listed above.
If selected, you will begin producing and reviewing OS-focused training data and evaluations according to project guidelines.
Have examples of past OS troubleshooting, scripts, or documentation ready to share if requested during the interview
