About AI Training Work
AI training is the human work behind modern artificial intelligence. Experts create examples, evaluate model responses, and provide precise feedback so AI systems can reason more accurately. In this role, your structural engineering expertise will directly shape how AI handles complex engineering problems.
Work remotely with a flexible, asynchronous schedule
Contribute to cutting-edge AI development through specialist expertise
Use your engineering knowledge to assess technical accuracy and soundness
The Role
OpenTrain is seeking a Structural Engineer AI Task Creator to design, create, and evaluate AI-training tasks rooted in real-world structural engineering. You will develop small, well-defined challenges that test an AI model's ability to reason about structural behavior, perform analysis and design work, and follow established engineering standards.
This is a part-time contractor opportunity for contributors based in the United States who can work 20 or more hours per week. The role requires strong written English and proficiency with OpenSees.
Employment type: Contractor and part time
Location: United States
Language: English
Time commitment: 20+ hours per week
Pay: $80–$110 per hour
What You'll Do
You will turn advanced structural engineering knowledge into clear, testable AI-training content. Each task should present an unambiguous engineering challenge and include the reference material needed to evaluate an AI-generated response.
Design AI-training tasks based on structural analysis, design, simulation, and code compliance
Write precise problem statements that test reasoning about structural behavior
Develop deterministic scoring checkers and reference solutions for each task
Evaluate AI-generated responses for technical accuracy, engineering soundness, and adherence to ACI 318, AISC, and Eurocode
Provide structured expert feedback to improve AI performance in structural engineering
Work independently and asynchronously on your own schedule
Required Qualifications
This role is listed at the entry level, but it requires substantial applied structural engineering capability. You must have at least a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field, along with practical experience using relevant analysis software and design codes.
BS or higher in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field
Proficiency with OpenSees for structural analysis
Applied experience in structural analysis and design
Familiarity with ACI 318, AISC 360, or Eurocode, including EN 1992, EN 1993, or EN 1998
Comfort with pushover analysis, response spectrum analysis, nonlinear modeling, or performance-based design
Ability to write clear, precise engineering problem statements and scoring criteria
Detail-oriented, methodical, and self-motivated approach to independent work
Strong written communication skills in English
Helpful Background
The following experience can strengthen your application and help you contribute to a broader range of structural engineering tasks.
Finite element analysis experience beyond commercial software, including OpenSees Tcl or Python scripting
Experience in seismic assessment, retrofit design, or performance-based earthquake engineering
Familiarity with reinforcement learning, AI-training workflows, or prompt engineering
Published research or professional project work in structural or earthquake engineering
PE, SE, or Chartered Engineer registration
Experience mentoring, teaching, or creating educational engineering content
