About AI Training Work
AI training is the human side of building modern artificial intelligence. Experts create examples, evaluate model responses, and provide structured feedback so AI systems can become more accurate, useful, and reliable.
This role applies that work to structural engineering. Your technical judgment will help assess whether AI-generated reasoning is mathematically sound, technically accurate, and consistent with recognized engineering standards.
The Role
OpenTrain AI is recruiting a Structural Engineering AI Task Creator to help improve AI reasoning about the built environment. You will transform real structural engineering challenges into well-defined training tasks, develop trusted solutions and deterministic checkers, and evaluate model responses for technical accuracy, engineering soundness, and standards compliance.
The position combines structural analysis expertise with practical AI task creation and expert feedback. It is listed as entry level, but requires applied structural engineering experience, strong technical judgment, and proficiency with OpenSees.
Fully remote, flexible hourly contract
Independent, asynchronous work
Part-time contractor opportunity
Advertised compensation of $80-$110 per hour
Role description indicates 10-40 hours per week; the expected commitment is 20+ hours per week
English-language work available worldwide
What You’ll Do
You will create realistic, well-scoped structural engineering challenges that test how AI models reason about structural behavior. Your work will include developing the problem, establishing a reliable solution, and assessing whether generated answers meet the required technical standard.
Write clear problem statements that test AI reasoning about structural behavior
Develop deterministic checkers that establish whether an answer is solvable and correct
Create trusted reference solutions for structural engineering tasks
Use OpenSees and related structural engineering experience to create realistic challenges
Evaluate AI-generated responses against engineering principles and recognized standards
Provide structured feedback to improve model performance in structural engineering
Required Qualifications
You should have a strong foundation in structural analysis and design, practical engineering judgment, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly in written English. The role requires a methodical, detail-oriented, and self-directed approach.
BE or equivalent degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field
Applied experience in structural analysis and design, including practical use of engineering software and design codes
Proficiency with OpenSees
Familiarity with AS 3600, AS 4100, Eurocode, ACI 318, or AISC
Understanding of pushover analysis, response spectrum analysis, nonlinear modeling, or performance-based design
Ability to formulate unambiguous engineering problems
Strong written English communication skills
Ability to work independently with close attention to detail
Helpful Experience
The following background is useful for creating more advanced and realistic tasks, though it is not presented as required. Relevant experience may include structural scripting, seismic assessment, advanced finite element analysis, or work connected to engineering education and AI workflows.
OpenSees Tcl or Python scripting
Finite element analysis beyond commercial software
Seismic assessment or retrofit design
Performance-based earthquake engineering
Reinforcement learning or prompt engineering workflows
Published structural or earthquake engineering work
CPEng registration with Engineers Australia
Mentoring or teaching engineering content
