About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. It helps professionals discover projects, build a credible AI training profile, and apply in minutes while developing a durable portfolio of work.

As an OpenTrain contractor, you can connect your software engineering expertise to projects that help improve advanced AI systems.

About AI Response Evaluation

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. People review and improve model-generated content so AI systems can produce more accurate, clear, useful, and reliable responses.

In this role, you will assess technical answers produced by advanced AI systems. Your judgments and written feedback will help identify both subtle factual problems and communication weaknesses in technical content.

The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting a Software Engineer AI Response Evaluator to review technical responses rather than develop software features. You will use professional software engineering judgment to evaluate documentation, error messages, code comments, architectural explanations, instructions, and other technical answers.

This is an individual contractor engagement performed remotely worldwide. The role is part time and requires 20 or more hours per week, with an advertised rate of $90-$140 USD per hour.

  • Employment type: Contractor and part time
  • Work arrangement: Remote, worldwide
  • Time requirement: 20+ hours per week
  • Advertised pay: $90-$140 USD per hour
  • Primary language: Native-level English

What You'll Do

You will make consistent, evidence-based assessments of AI-generated technical communication and explain the reasoning behind each judgment. The work requires close attention to both technical accuracy and how effectively information is communicated to its intended audience.

  • Evaluate and compare multiple AI-generated responses to technical prompts.
  • Score responses for correctness, clarity, tone, usefulness, and audience suitability.
  • Write detailed rationales that explain assessments and identify meaningful evidence.
  • Distinguish technically accurate responses that communicate poorly from fluent responses containing factual errors.
  • Identify inconsistencies, ambiguities, misleading statements, and instructional weaknesses.
  • Document observations precisely and consistently across evaluation tasks.
  • Collaborate asynchronously with project managers and reviewers to maintain evaluation standards.
  • Work independently to complete agreed deliverables within defined timeframes.

Required Qualifications

This opportunity is intended for professionals who can combine software engineering experience with precise technical communication and analytical judgment. Prior AI evaluation experience is helpful but not required.

  • Professional experience as a software engineer using a modern technology stack.
  • Native-level English fluency and exceptional written communication.
  • Experience authoring or reviewing technical documentation, design documents, API references, or specifications.
  • Experience with code review, design review, or feedback on technical writing.
  • Ability to judge whether technical communication is correct, clear, audience-appropriate, and instructionally useful.
  • Ability to identify factual errors, ambiguity, misleading fluency, and audience misalignment.
  • Ability to score and compare technical answers using consistent quality judgments.
  • Strong analytical reasoning and careful attention to detail.
  • Ability to explain analytical decisions precisely in writing.

Why This Work Matters

Every major AI system depends on examples prepared and reviewed by people. By evaluating technical answers, you help shape how advanced models explain software concepts, interpret instructions, and communicate with developers.

AI training work is part of a fast-growing technology field and can offer remote, flexible opportunities for people with specialized expertise. Your software engineering background can support rigorous model evaluation without requiring prior AI experience.
