About AI Training and Model Evaluation
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Professionals review, compare, and improve the examples that modern AI systems use to learn, including written responses, technical explanations, and code-related content.
This work gives experienced specialists a direct role in shaping cutting-edge AI systems. Many projects are remote and flexible, making them suitable for professionals who want to contribute part time while using their existing expertise.
The Role
OpenTrain is engaging Software Engineers for a remote contractor project focused on evaluating outputs from advanced AI systems. You will use your software engineering knowledge to assess responses to technical prompts, including documentation, error messages, code comments, architectural explanations, and instructions.
This engagement focuses on critical analysis and evaluation rather than software development or feature delivery. You will determine whether AI-generated responses are correct, clearly communicated, appropriate for their intended audience, and genuinely useful. No prior AI experience is required because the role is built around your domain expertise.
The expected project duration is 3 to 6 months, with a weekly commitment of at least 20 hours. The role is conducted in English and is open to candidates based in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom.
- Role type: Contractor and part time
- Location: Remote
- Compensation: $90-$140 per hour
- Expected commitment: At least 20 hours per week
- Expected duration: 3 to 6 months
- Eligible locations: United States, Canada, and United Kingdom
- Working language: English
What You'll Do
You will evaluate technical AI outputs with precision and consistency, documenting the reasoning behind your judgments. The work requires distinguishing responses that sound fluent from those that are actually accurate, useful, and aligned with the prompt.
- Evaluate and compare multiple AI-generated responses to technical prompts for clarity, correctness, tone, and usefulness.
- Assign analytical quality scores and write detailed rationales supporting each assessment.
- Identify responses that are technically accurate but poorly communicated, or fluent but factually incorrect.
- Document observations and findings with precision and consistency.
- Find and explain small errors, inconsistencies, or ambiguities in technical communication.
- Collaborate asynchronously with project managers and reviewers to stay aligned on evaluation standards.
- Work independently to complete agreed-upon requirements and deliverables within defined timeframes.
Requirements and Preferred Qualifications
This role is intended for software engineering professionals with strong technical communication and analytical abilities. Native or bilingual English proficiency is required, along with the ability to work comfortably in English.
Experience with AI model evaluation, annotation, or RLHF projects is a plus, but it is not required.
- Native-level English fluency and exceptional written communication skills.
- Professional software engineering experience in any modern technology stack.
- Experience authoring or reviewing technical documentation, design documents, API references, or specifications.
- Experience conducting code reviews, design reviews, or providing feedback on technical writing.
- Ability to judge technical communication for audience appropriateness and instructional value.
- Strong analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Skills in software engineering, technical documentation, code review, content evaluation, written communication, critical analysis, editing, and independent work.
- Software engineering and technical AI evaluation subject matter expertise.
- Intermediate experience level.
Who Should Apply
Apply if you enjoy examining technical content closely and can explain why one answer is more accurate, clear, or helpful than another. This opportunity may suit software engineers who have reviewed code, written technical documentation, evaluated designs, or coached others on technical communication.
You do not need previous AI-training experience. Your professional software engineering background, written communication ability, and careful judgment are the foundation for this work.
- Software engineers who want to contribute to the development of next-generation AI systems.
- Technical professionals who are comfortable evaluating documentation, explanations, and code-related content.
- Independent contributors who can manage a 20-plus-hour weekly commitment.
- Candidates based in the United States, Canada, or United Kingdom with native or bilingual English proficiency.
