OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect skilled contributors with projects that teach AI systems how to understand, reason, and produce correct outputs.
Work with OpenTrain to build a flexible, remote career shaping how state-of-the-art AI behaves — from writing prompts to rating model responses and improving dataset quality.
About AI training work
AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback) is the human side of making AI useful and safe. Contributors create examples, evaluate model outputs, and refine datasets so models learn correct, reliable behavior. This role focuses on Excel knowledge: you’ll teach models how to reason about spreadsheets, automation, and integrations.
The Role
We’re hiring a Senior Excel Specialist (Subject Matter Expert) based in India with C1-level English to develop Excel-focused prompts, model responses, and evaluation guidelines. You will craft clear, detailed Excel scenarios and assess AI-generated answers for accuracy, efficiency, and bias.
This is a contractor, part-time role that pays $23 USD per hour and expects a regular commitment of 20+ hours per week.
Develop detailed Excel-based prompts and model responses to train AI on advanced spreadsheet tasks.
Evaluate, rank, and refine AI outputs to improve performance, correctness, and consistency.
Document workflows and decisions so training data is reproducible and auditable.
What you'll do day-to-day
Create realistic, high-quality Excel prompts and sample solutions covering formulas, pivot tables, Power Query, VBA, and integrations.
Score and rank model-generated answers, provide corrective edits, and write guidance for annotators.
Identify and flag biases, inconsistent behavior, or incorrect assumptions in model outputs.
Design test cases and evaluate model performance on large-sheet scenarios and automation tasks.
Document examples of complex Excel workflows you’ve built or automated for review.
Requirements
You must meet all mandatory requirements below. Do not apply if you are not based in India or do not have C1-level English.
Location: India (must be based in India).
Language: C1-level English proficiency required.
Experience: 7+ years of advanced Microsoft Excel experience (complex formulas, PivotTables, Power Query, VBA scripting).
Integration skills: Experience integrating Excel with Power BI, SQL, or automation platforms; RESTful API experience is a plus.
Data scale: Comfortable working with large datasets and optimizing Excel for performance.
Work style: Strong analytical ability, attention to detail, and ability to produce high-quality work independently with minimal supervision.
Availability: Expected 20+ hours per week; you will be asked to state an exact weekly-hours commitment during interview.
Pay & employment: Contractor, part-time, $23 USD per hour.
Interview & testing process (important)
At the start of the interview you will be required to complete a coding/skill test and participate in a live interview. If you are dishonest during the interview or test you will be permanently banned from the OpenTrain AI platform.
During the interview we will ask for specific background details and technical answers. Your responses will be recorded in the AI interview summary.
You must clearly provide these items during the interview; the interviewer will include them in the AI interview summary: highest level of education; years of experience with advanced Excel functionalities; exact number of hours per week you can commit (give a precise range, e.g., "20-25 hours per w
Interview technical questions (these will be asked directly to candidates): QUESTION 1: "Imagine you're working with a dataset containing 100,000 rows, and you need to identify and highlight duplicate entries across multiple columns while ensuring minimal performance lag. How would you approach this
QUESTION 2: "You need to automate a monthly report that consolidates data from multiple worksheets into one summary sheet, applies specific formatting, and sends the file via email. Walk me through how you would achieve this using VBA."
QUESTION 3: "How would you pull data from a SQL database into Excel, ensure it's dynamically updated, and build a dashboard with key insights using PivotTables and Power Query?"
How to apply
Apply through your OpenTrain account and include a résumé plus concrete examples of complex Excel workflows or automations you’ve built (links, screenshots, or short descriptions are helpful). Applications without real examples may not be considered.
In your application, include a brief note of your exact weekly availability (you will be asked to confirm this exactly in the interview).
Be prepared to complete the coding/skill test and live interview described above.
