About AI Training Work
AI training (sometimes called data labeling, annotation, or human feedback) is the human expertise that teaches models how to solve tasks. This role is part of that ecosystem: you will evaluate AI-generated spreadsheet outputs and the human reviews that train and validate them.
Many projects are remote and flexible, and they range from entry-level tasks to specialist work that pays more for domain experience. This position combines domain expertise in Excel with QA and contributor coaching.
The Role
OpenTrain is recruiting an Excel Quality Assurance Lead to oversee spreadsheet-focused AI training work. You will review AI-generated formulas, spreadsheet workflows, modeling assumptions, and trainer/QA submissions, then deliver clear, actionable feedback to maintain quality and rubric alignment.
This is a part-time contract role (20+ hours/week), based in the United States and fully remote. Compensation is up to $55/hour.
What You'll Do
Review Excel formulas, cell references, lookup logic, dynamic arrays, pivot tables, charts, conditional formatting, and written explanations for correctness and clarity.
Evaluate spreadsheet tasks for reproducibility, formatting, rubric adherence, and robustness of assumptions or model structure.
Communicate guideline changes and answer contributor questions on formulas, Power Query, modeling assumptions, and best practices.
Create and maintain documentation: style guides, examples, FAQs, calibration tasks, honeypots, trackers, and onboarding materials.
Support contributor activation and onboarding, lead calibration sessions, and suggest QA process improvements and dashboards.
Requirements
You must demonstrate strong Excel expertise and the ability to give precise, constructive written feedback. Prior experience with spreadsheet QA or rubric-based review is strongly preferred.
Strong Excel background: formulas, functions, cell references, lookup logic, dynamic arrays, pivot tables, charts, conditional formatting, and modeling best practices.
Ability to spot incorrect formulas, wrong references, circular logic, fragile models, poor assumptions, and incomplete explanations.
Clear written English and experience communicating feedback and guideline changes.
Comfort supporting remote contributors and familiarity with Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, trackers, dashboards, Excel Online, and PM systems.
Experience with AI training, data annotation, or spreadsheet QA preferred.
Helpful Background
Degree or equivalent experience in Finance, Accounting, Business, Data Analytics, Economics, Statistics, Operations, or Information Systems.
Familiarity with advanced Excel features such as XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, FILTER, SORT, UNIQUE, LET, LAMBDA, Power Query, Power Pivot, VBA macros, Solver, and scenario modeling.
Experience creating style guides, FAQs, calibration tasks, honeypots, and onboarding materials for distributed teams.
Pay, Hours & Location
This is a remote contract position for candidates located in the United States. The role expects 20+ hours per week and pays up to $55 per hour.
Employment types: contractor, part-time. Language: English required.
Who Should Apply
Apply if you combine deep Excel skills with experience or interest in QA, documentation, and helping distributed contributors follow rubrics and improve quality. This role is well suited to people with finance or analytics backgrounds who enjoy teaching, writing clear feedback, and improving processes.
How It Works
OpenTrain manages the project and hires contractors directly. You will review submissions, update documentation, and participate in calibration and onboarding tasks. Building a strong OpenTrain profile helps you and peers find more specialized opportunities in AI training over time.
Apply with your relevant Excel and QA experience, and be prepared to show examples of spreadsheet reviews or documentation you’ve produced.
Work remotely, collaborate via common tools (Google Sheets/Docs, Discord), and expect routine QA cycles and contributor communication.
