About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help people discover projects, consolidate proof-of-work, and grow a durable freelance portfolio so you can build long-term opportunities in the human side of AI.

OpenTrain AI is the hiring and contracting organization for this role. We hire specialists directly to do high-impact annotation and review work that shapes how real AI systems behave.

Why AI Training and Scientific Review Matter

AI systems learn from examples and human feedback. Scientific document review applies domain expertise to check model outputs against experimental data, figures, and technical writing so models learn accurate, reliable behavior.

This work is high-value, remote, and flexible — a way to apply laboratory or R&D experience to cutting-edge AI development while working part-time and independently.

The Role

We are recruiting a Scientific Document Review Specialist to evaluate model outputs that reference scientific figures, laboratory reports, and technical publications. You will apply project rubrics, document evidence-based judgments, and write clear feedback that helps models improve.

This is a remote contractor, part-time position suitable for people with scientific or laboratory backgrounds. Prior AI-training experience is not required; real-world expertise in the subject matter is the key qualification.

  • Employment: Contractor, Part-time
  • Workload: 20+ hours per week
  • Language: English fluency required
  • Data type: Technical documents (figures, reports, publications)
  • Labeling tasks: Evaluation/ratings and text summarization

What You’ll Do

Perform careful, repeatable reviews of model outputs and source materials using detailed project rubrics. Your judgments must be well-documented and explainable so they can be used to fine-tune models.

Work independently while maintaining consistency and high quality across repeated tasks.

  • Evaluate model outputs against source figures, tables, and experimental results
  • Apply rubric criteria and record evaluation ratings precisely
  • Write concise, evidence-based summaries and feedback to explain judgments
  • Flag major factual errors, inconsistencies, or problematic model behaviors
  • Follow project instructions and maintain consistent annotation quality

Requirements

This role requires demonstrable scientific or laboratory knowledge and the ability to interpret technical material accurately. You should be comfortable documenting careful, written feedback and following structured scoring rubrics.

  • Scientific or laboratory background in biology, chemistry, physics, R&D, quality science, or manufacturing science
  • Ability to evaluate figures, reports, experimental results, and technical publications for accuracy
  • Experience creating rubrics or structured review criteria
  • Strong analytical reasoning, problem-solving, and attention to detail
  • Clear written communication and documentation skills
  • Comfort working remotely and independently on contractor tasks
  • Fluent in English

Compensation & Schedule

Pay for this project is $40–$50 per hour. Estimated project earnings are $6,400–$8,000 based on the schedule and duration shown on OpenTrain. You will be paid as a contractor through OpenTrain AI.

The role expects 20+ hours per week but offers the flexibility typical of AI training contracts — you will coordinate hours and deliverables as described in the project listing.

  • Hourly rate: $40–$50 USD
  • Estimated project earnings: $6,400–$8,000
  • Schedule: 20+ hours/week, remote, worldwide

How It Works / How To Apply

Apply through your OpenTrain profile. If selected, you will complete project onboarding that explains the rubric, examples, and the documentation workflow.

Onboarding may include qualification tasks to verify consistent application of rubric criteria. Successful completion qualifies you to begin paid review work and builds credentials on your OpenTrain profile.

  • Create or sign in to your OpenTrain account and submit your application
  • Complete any qualification or onboarding tasks to demonstrate rubric use
  • Work remotely and submit evaluations and summaries according to project guidelines
