About AI Training Work
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. People with real-world expertise help create structured examples, evaluate information, and explain how work is performed so AI systems can become more useful and accurate.
This opportunity focuses on public-defense workflows. Your experience-based descriptions can help organize the responsibilities, task relationships, and variations involved in legal practice without exposing confidential case information.
- Contribute to cutting-edge AI work through your existing professional knowledge.
- Work remotely on a focused, flexible research assignment.
The Role
OpenTrain is recruiting current and former public defenders for a paid remote research opportunity about the work performed in public defense. You will describe your own responsibilities, the smaller activities within them, and how those activities connect in practice.
The research values firsthand legal-practice knowledge rather than an idealized job description. You must be able to explain the jurisdiction and period in which you practiced and use careful judgment when discussing confidential or privileged information.
- Role: Public Defense Work Research Participant
- Work type: Remote contractor opportunity
- Language: English
- Experience level listed: Entry level
What You'll Do
You will review written instructions and provide detailed, experience-based responses through a structured survey. The work asks you to describe personally performed public-defense tasks and explain how real workflows vary across responsibilities and arrangements.
A later research phase may ask you to provide additional details about a combined task tree. That phase will have separate scope and compensation terms.
- Describe your primary public-defense responsibilities.
- Break responsibilities into the smaller activities that make up the work.

- Describe the jurisdiction and period in which you practiced.
- Provide additional task-tree details if invited to a later research phase.
Requirements and Confidentiality
You must be a current or former public defender with hands-on experience representing indigent clients. You should be able to describe work you personally performed clearly and accurately, including task dependencies and workflow variations.
Familiarity with court-appointed or contract public-defense arrangements is relevant. You must never provide real case documents, client names, case numbers, identifying facts, confidential information, or privileged material.
