The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Criminal Defense Legal AI Evaluation Attorney to apply professional criminal defense experience to AI training work. You will review legal documents and criminal court scenarios, assess generated legal content for soundness and ethical compliance, and create realistic analyses, agreements, motions, and trial strategies.

This project focuses on translating practical criminal defense judgment into precise written and verbal feedback, explanations, and training data that improve legal model outputs.

• Remote, project-based contractor engagement
• Part-time schedule of 20+ hours per week
• Hourly rate range: $140-$400 USD

What You'll Do

• Review and annotate legal documents and criminal court scenarios for accuracy and contextual relevance.
• Create and evaluate hypothetical case analyses, plea agreements, motions, and trial strategies grounded in criminal defense practice.
• Explain legal reasoning, evidentiary considerations, and procedural steps in detailed written responses.
• Assess AI-generated content for legal soundness, clarity, and ethical compliance.
• Craft concise written and verbal explanations for complex legal questions.
• Help calibrate and refine model outputs with a multidisciplinary remote team.
• Contribute to ongoing improvements in legal data quality and project methodologies.

Required Qualifications

This role requires substantial criminal defense experience despite being listed as an entry-level AI training opportunity. Your professional legal judgment, writing ability, and familiarity with criminal practice will be central to producing reliable evaluations and training examples.

• Active license to practice law.
• Substantial experience in criminal defense, including criminal law, trial advocacy, and case strategy.
• Ability to analyze complex fact patterns, legal arguments, and evidentiary issues.
• Experience drafting and reviewing motions, briefs, plea agreements, and other legal documents.
• Ability to explain criminal-law reasoning and procedural decisions clearly.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with meticulous attention to detail.
• Strong ethical judgment, confidentiality practices, and commitment to maintaining client confidentiality.
• Ability to work independently in a remote, project-based contractor engagement.

Helpful Background

Experience explaining nuanced legal decisions, evaluating procedural choices, and distinguishing legally sound reasoning from unsupported conclusions will help you produce useful feedback on model-generated material.
