About Legal AI Evaluation

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Expert contributors create examples, review model responses, and establish quality standards that help AI systems become more accurate, useful, and reliable.

In this role, your professional legal judgment will help evaluate how well AI handles practical legal work, including commercial contracts and related legal documents.

  • Shape how AI reasons about real-world legal issues
  • Apply legal analysis to response evaluation and task design
  • Translate professional judgment into clear quality standards

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a legal expert to create, review, and improve high-difficulty tasks used to evaluate AI systems on practical legal work. You will analyze legal issues, apply relevant laws and principles, assess the accuracy and usefulness of responses, produce gold-standard solutions, and refine outputs for clarity.

The subject matter centers on legal document AI evaluation, with particular emphasis on commercial-contract and legal-document expertise. The listed experience level is entry level for this project classification, but the role requires substantial professional legal experience and qualifications.

  • Work worldwide in English
  • Part-time contractor schedule of 20+ hours per week
  • Focus on legal document evaluation and text generation

What You'll Do

You will turn practical legal expertise into rigorous evaluation tasks and consistent standards. The work requires careful reasoning, precise writing, and the ability to distinguish technically correct answers from advice that is genuinely useful in practice.

  • Create expert-level legal tasks reflecting real lawyer responsibilities
  • Produce accurate, well-reasoned gold-standard solutions
  • Review and calibrate contributor work to maintain consistent quality
  • Evaluate legal responses for accuracy, clarity, usefulness, and practical judgment
  • Identify legal risks and assess complex matters using relevant laws, regulations, and guidance
  • Escalate genuine edge cases and unclear evaluation criteria for resolution
  • Apply commercial-contract and legal-document expertise to the subject matter

Required Qualifications

This role is designed for an experienced legal practitioner who can combine detailed legal analysis with practical advice and professional judgment. Applicants should have around 5 to 15 years of legal practice experience, ideally as a Senior Associate, Counsel, or equivalent.

  • Juris Doctor, active bar admission, or equivalent regional legal qualification and professional license
  • Advanced experience drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and revising commercial contracts and legal agreements
  • Experience working with policies and related legal documents
  • Strong legal research, analytical reasoning, and risk-spotting skills
  • Ability to interpret laws, regulations, and regulatory guidance
  • Ability to translate legal analysis into actionable recommendations
  • Ability to assess response accuracy, clarity, usefulness, and rubric consistency

Helpful Background

Experience in AI evaluation, data annotation, content review, quality assurance, or a related analytical role is helpful but not required. A bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience is also relevant.

  • AI evaluation or data-labeling experience
  • Content review or quality assurance experience
  • Related analytical work
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
