About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help freelancers consolidate proof of work, discover projects that match their skills, and grow a durable portfolio of AI training experience.

  • Work with a centralized profile that shows your annotation history and skills.
  • Build long-term freelance opportunities in one place while staying 100% remote.

Why AI training matters

AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human work that teaches modern AI systems how to read, decide, and act. Contributors directly shape model behavior by preparing and validating examples the models learn from.

  • Flexible, accessible, and often part-time work you can do remotely.
  • Projects range from simple transcriptions to specialist tasks—document review with PII handling is essential for safe, compliant systems.

The role

As a PII Document Review Specialist you will review large volumes of structured and unstructured documents to check accuracy, identify quality issues, annotate and classify content, and redact or flag sensitive personal information. You will also perform QA validation, keep detailed records, and communicate findings clearly to collaborating teams.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time.
  • Time requirement: 20+ hours per week (remote, worldwide).
  • Language: English required.

What you'll do day-to-day

You will follow strict guidelines and taxonomies to ensure consistent treatment of PII and other sensitive items. Your work will directly affect data quality used to train and evaluate AI systems.

  • Review documents for accuracy, completeness, and data quality.
  • Annotate and classify content using provided taxonomies (classification, evaluation/rating, entity/NER).
  • Redact or flag Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and other privacy risks when required.
  • Perform QA checks to verify integrity and validate outputs.
  • Maintain detailed records of reviewed materials and actions taken.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to collaborating teams.

Required skills and experience

This is an intermediate-level role that requires prior experience reviewing documents at scale and working with PII. You must be comfortable following complex rules, doing repetitive high-accuracy work, and performing QA on large data sets.

  • Experience in document review, auditing, annotation, redaction, or data classification at scale.
  • Familiarity with handling Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and privacy best practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in repetitive tasks.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow complex guidelines and established taxonomies.
  • Experience with QA or validation workflows on large data sets.

Helpful background (not required)

Candidates with legal, compliance, privacy, auditing, or information security experience often transition quickly into this work and may be especially well suited to PII-focused projects.

  • Prior work supporting data-driven AI or machine learning projects.
  • Comfort with collaboration tools and digital workflow platforms.

Pay, tools, and next steps

Pay is hourly, USD, with a range of $63–$119 per hour depending on task and experience. You will work as a contractor and manage your schedule within the 20+ hours/week expectation. The project uses document annotation and classification workflows; specific labeling software will be provided when you start.

  • Label types: Classification, Evaluation/Rating, Entity (NER) classification.
  • Data type: DOCUMENT.
  • To apply: create or update your OpenTrain profile, confirm your availability (20+ hrs/week), and complete any required qualification tasks the platform assigns.
