About OpenTrain

OpenTrain AI is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect people with flexible, remote projects that directly shape how modern AI systems learn and behave.

We hire and contract contributors for annotation and QA work across many document and language projects — building reliable datasets that power real-world AI.

About AI training and document annotation work

AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human side of building AI: people create and verify examples that models learn from. Document annotation helps models read and understand complex layouts, tables, forms, and contracts.

This work is often 100% remote, flexible, and accessible — valuable for people who are detail-oriented and fluent in the project's language.

The role

OpenTrain AI is hiring native Japanese speakers located in Japan to work as PDF Annotators and QA Reviewers. You will annotate Japanese documents (technical presentations, government forms, contracts) and/or review completed annotations for accuracy.

This is contract work with an initial short pilot (2–3 hours) and the possibility of ongoing production work based on performance.

What you'll do

  • Draw bounding boxes around document elements: text blocks, tables, figures, headers, captions.
  • Classify elements using predefined annotation categories and apply reading order/hierarchical relationships.
  • Verify and correct OCR-generated Japanese text for accuracy and formatting.
  • Create simple HTML-based descriptions for tables (basic HTML required).
  • As a QA Reviewer: review completed annotations, confirm correctness, and provide actionable feedback.

Requirements

  • Native Japanese speaker with professional-level reading and writing.
  • Currently located in Japan and able to work from Japan.
  • Basic English proficiency (B1 or higher) to read platform instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow detailed guidelines consistently.
  • Reliable internet connection and ability to work independently to meet deadlines.
  • Available to start within 3 business days of notification and complete the 2–3 hour pilot.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with document annotation, data labeling, transcription, or structured QA work.
  • Familiarity with technical, financial, or legal documents is a plus.
  • Basic HTML knowledge for creating table descriptions.

Compensation & schedule

Pay is hourly and paid in USD. Annotators and QA Reviewers are hired as contractors with flexible schedules during production.

Initial pilot is 2–3 hours to assess fit and accuracy; production work is flexible and may continue based on performance.

  • Annotators: $18.00 USD per hour.
  • QA Reviewers: $20.00 USD per hour.
  • Employment type: Contractor.

How it works / next steps

If you meet the requirements and are located in Japan, you can apply to join the pilot. Successful pilot completion may lead to ongoing annotation or QA tasks.

You will receive project instructions and guidelines; accuracy, consistency, and timely delivery determine continued work.

  • Complete a 2–3 hour pilot within the requested timeframe.
  • Follow detailed annotation guidelines and use the platform tools provided.
  • QA Reviewers will flag issues and provide feedback to annotators as part of quality workflows.
