  • Remote contract work for candidates in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States
  • Part-time schedule of less than 20 hours per week
  • Hourly pay of $80 to $150 USD

About AI Training and Scientific Reasoning Review

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Expert contributors review examples and model outputs so advanced systems can produce more accurate, reliable, and useful reasoning.

In this role, your physics judgment will help assess whether solutions, derivations, and theoretical arguments are correct, well supported, and methodologically sound.

  • Contribute to the development of emerging AI systems
  • Apply professional physics expertise to technically demanding review work
  • Work remotely with a flexible part-time structure

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Physics Research Review Expert to evaluate scientific reasoning used in AI training. You will review researcher- and AI-generated material across specialized physics domains, identify substantive issues, and provide technically rigorous feedback that supports iterative improvement.

  • Review physics solutions, mathematical derivations, and theoretical arguments
  • Assess correctness, methodological soundness, and the adequacy of supporting reasoning
  • Distinguish substantive scientific problems from stylistic or cosmetic issues

What You'll Do

You will critically examine technical work for errors, unjustified transitions, missing assumptions, dimensional inconsistencies, and weaknesses in logic. Your written feedback should explain the reasoning behind each identified flaw while also recognizing valid approaches that could be clarified, sharpened, or made more efficient.

Use LaTeX, SymPy, Python, and Jupyter to independently verify or counter-check scientific claims as appropriate. Deliver structured, nuanced feedback that can improve submitted work and AI-generated reasoning.

  • Detect subtle errors and unsupported steps in physics reasoning
  • Check assumptions, dimensions, logic, and scientific methodology
  • Use computational and technical tools for independent validation
  • Explain flaws clearly and provide actionable guidance for improvement
  • Recognize correct reasoning that can be made clearer or more efficient

Required Qualifications

This opportunity is listed as entry level, but it requires substantial academic and research expertise. Candidates must hold a PhD in physics and maintain an active record of independent research in a specialized physics subfield.

  • PhD-level physics expertise and active independent research
  • Advanced proficiency with LaTeX, SymPy, Python, and Jupyter
  • Ability to identify missing assumptions, dimensional inconsistencies, methodological flaws, and unjustified steps
  • Experience evaluating physics work through peer review, supervision, dissertation committees, research seminars, or journal clubs
  • Exceptional written communication and technically rigorous feedback skills
  • Reliable high-speed internet and a computer suitable for demanding technical work

Relevant Research Background

Research experience in a specialized physics area is relevant to this work. Postdoctoral research, research fellowships, junior or assistant professorships, senior research scientist experience, and recent representative publications are particularly useful backgrounds.

  • High-energy physics
  • Mathematical physics
  • Condensed matter
  • Atomic, molecular, and optical physics or quantum optics
  • Statistical physics
  • Biophysics
  • Gravitation and cosmology
  • Quantum information
  • Optical materials

Who Should Apply

This role is suited to an active physics researcher who enjoys rigorous technical analysis and can communicate complex judgments constructively. It is especially relevant for experts who have evaluated the work of others and can separate major scientific problems from opportunities to improve presentation.

  • Physics researchers with a specialized subfield focus
  • Experts comfortable validating theoretical and computational claims
  • Researchers experienced in peer review, mentoring, seminars, or academic evaluation
  • Clear technical writers who can provide balanced, actionable feedback
